Hawaii Five-0 Recap: Ke Koho Mamao Aku (Longshot)

Hawaii Five-0” Season 5 Episode 9 “Ke Koho Mamao Aku (Longshot)” aired last Friday, Dec. 11, 2014 at 9:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, the team investigated the murder of a bull rider who was found dead on Mauna Loa. It led them to uncover the truth behind a missing racehorse. Meanwhile, Commander Steve McGarett (Alex O’ Loughlin) obtained a Christmas Tree for the Williams family illegally. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with an astronaut trying to fix the Pilgrim. It is a robot meant to collect samples from the surface of planets such as Mars. While he did so, Mission Control told him to take a look behind him, as a man, dressed like a cowboy, came out of nowhere, and asked for some help. After he collapsed, the astronaut tried to revive him, but it was to no avail.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett (Alex O’ Loughlin) went Christmas Tree shopping with Detective Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan), who went shopping at the last minute. As Danny couldn’t afford a $ 750 tree, against his better judgment, Steve talked him into getting a tree from a “protected forest preserve." While driving back home, Steve received a call telling him that they had a case. However, Steve would not be able to go for the initial investigation as he was going to be stuck with the governor in a meeting for the entire morning.

A helicopter then took Dr. Max Bergman (Masi Oka), Captain Lou Grover (Chi McBride) and Danny to the HI-SEAS (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation) training ground on Mauna Loa, which resembled the terrain on Mars. There, they were greeted by Hawai’i Island Detective Dean Alawa (Eidan Hanzei), who told them that the man had died before the paramedics could arrive. Danny was also informed by Max that the HI-SEAS was a program used to train astronauts as the terrain of Mauna Loa was similar to that of Mars. Lou then asked the detective to quickly set up a “search perimeter” in order to look for any tire tracks or the car of the victim. Max was then surprised to see Hawai’i Island Medical Examiner Dr. Sanjeet Dhawan (Ravi Patel) examining the body. However, Dr. Dhawan explained that since they were going to use his office, then he “had to be involved.” Both Danny and Lou then noticed that while both doctors gave them their initial thoughts about the body, that the two were enemies, even if they “gained their pathology residency together." While Dr. Dhawan started telling them his findings, Max quickly cut him off after looking at the victim’s pupils, and told them that he had been poisoned. Lou then interrupted their bickering by telling them to move the body to the morgue. The detective then told them that their victim’s prints had no known match. He also nformed them that the “closest ranch” to them was fifteen miles away.

At the morgue, Dr. Dhawan got annoyed at Max, who snapped pictures of the side of the victim, and seemed to be concentrated over it even if it was “unrelated” to his death. After Danny and Lou came in, Danny forced Max to inform them why he and Dr. Dhawan had a rivalry going on. Max then informed them that it “was over a certain woman." He then told them that the cause of death was indeed poisoning, and that Dr. Dhawan had narrowed down the toxins to search for. Dhawan then told them that to know for certain, he would have to analyze the contents of the stomach as the toxin was most likely ingested. Meanwhile, Max was able to conclude based on traces that he found, and based on fractures on the victim, that the victim had been a bull rider.

At a nearby rodeo, Officer Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park) revealed to Danny that her father used to take her to rodeos a lot, and had learned how to tie a rope thanks to some of them. They then met the owner of the rodeo, Al Mokuau (Ron Yuan), who identified the bull rider as Keone Maka (Christopher Huffine). He and Jill, the manager of the riders, informed them that he had one enemy- Luke Pakele (Cody Easterbrook), another rider. It turned out that Keone had caught Luke injecting steroids into his bull. Luke did it to make him more aggressive, which would earn him more points as the more aggressive the bull was, then the more points the rider gained. Luke had been fired because of this, and had to forfeit his prize money. Lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim), who helped them out from the Five-0 Headquarters then informed them that Luke had been “arrested twice for cattle rustling,” and that he lived in the Kalava Molten Lava Gardens. Danny and Kono decided to pay Luke a visit. Lou went over to Keone’s house to look for the toxin that he had ingested. Afterward, Officer Pua Kai (Shawn Thomsen) came in, acted cryptically, like he was investigating something, and asked for Danny and Steve. As they weren’t there at the moment, Pua left his card with Chin Ho, much to his amusement.

As soon as Luke saw Danny and Kono, he ran until Kono slammed into him, and tied him up with a rope. They found several steroid vials in his truck but told them that he did not kill Keone. Meanwhile, Lou discovered that Keone’s house had been tossed and his laptop had been taken. It made them realize that Keone’s murder was not about revenge as it seemed like someone was “looking for evidence.”

Back at the morgue, Dr. Dhawan was overjoyed after learning that Max’s initial guess regarding the toxin was wrong. However, Max was one step ahead of him. He had just told Lou that the toxin was most likely in liquid form. After this, Dr. Dhawan told him that at least, “he still had Janice.” This made Max mad as he claimed that Dr. Dhawan had stolen “her from me.” However, Dr. Dhawan countered that she hadn’t been his to begin with. He then told Max that he should be the one who should b angrier. Their friends, after listening to only Max’s side of the story, had frozen him out. Max told him that he didn’t tell them to do that, even if he had “betrayed his trust”, but Dr. Dhawan replied that he had allowed it to happen.

Back at Keone’s house, Lou discovered a vial of blood in a milk carton. On the drive back, Kono mentioned to Danny that they might still be working on “Christmas morning,” which Danny didn’t like. He then revealed to Kono that he was a little bit upset as he had discovered that his daughter, Grace (Teilor Grubbs) no longer believed in Santa Claus. However, Kono encouraged Danny to look on the bright side, and now, he could fully take “credit for all the awesome gifts.” Afterward, he admitted that he might be upset because Grace was “growing up so fast.”

Meanwhile, Pua went over to Danny’s house and collected some evidence that he had found on the windshield of his car. A little while later, he went to the forest reserve. He asked a woman to identify the two women she had seen hacking down a tree from the reserve and identified them as Danny and Steve.

Back at Five-0 Headquarters, Chin Ho informed Steve, who had finally gotten out of his meeting, that Pua had stopped by acting weird, and had asked for both Danny and Steve, but didn’t say why. Chin Ho then informed him that they had “located Keone’s truck a mile from the training ground." It seemed like he had lost control of his truck while he was driving, as it seemed like the poison had kicked in then. Then, after the truck had crashed, he had probably went on foot to ask for help, which was why he ended up in the HI-SEAS training ground. After calling up the others at the Hawai’i Police Department, he informed them that Keone had made nine calls to a man in Los Angeles named Jeff Harrison, a horse trainer, in the last forty-eight hours. Harrison was the trainer of a famous racehorse named Urban Myth who had gone missing the night before his biggest race yet. It turned out that Harrison had arrived that morning. He had just bought a return ticket back home to Los Angeles, which also left that day. However, when Kono and Danny arrived at Harrison’s motel, Harrison ran out of the motel and asked for help before collapsing on the ground. Danny and Kono then brought the seizing man to the hospital, while Max and Dhawan searched the motel for the poison. Dhawan then discovered that the water bottle had been laced with “liquid nicotine." They quickly brought back to the laboratory in order to verify what it was. While they ran the toxin, Max apologized for turning a blind eye against what their friends had done to him, which Dhawan accepted. As the test confirmed that it was liquid nicotine, Max complimented him and told him to call it in. Thanks to their fast work, they were able to save Harrison’s life.

Danny learned from Lou that the blood from the vial was freshly drawn and that it was horse blood. He asked him to get in touch with the American Thoroughbred Association so that they could run the blood against Urban Myth’s DNA. After a while, Lou received confirmation that the blood was a match to Urban Myth. Danny then realized that the reason why Urban Myth was never ransomed was because whoever had stolen the horse, wanted to “put him up to stud.” Afterward, they learned that one of the stud ranches on Keone’s day job route to deliver feed and hay was owned by Al Mokuau.

At Mokuau’s Ranch, Nakata Ranch, and after combing through his financials, they realized that Mokuau was going to kill Urban Myth. They were then able to stop him from shooting Urban Myth. After they cuffed him, they revealed that they knew that Mokuau had poisoned Keone’s coffee travel mug with liquid nicotine after he had realized that Keone had recognized Urban Myth. Mokuau then revealed that he knew that Keone had known that Urban Myth was there. He had told Mokuau that he was fond of horse racing, and because Keone had snapped pictures of the horses. After Mokuau had ransacked Keone’s house, he had learned that Keone was going to meet with Harrison to properly identify Urban Myth. Ir which was why he poisoned Harrison as well. Afterward, they were able to reunite Harrison with his horse- Urban Myth.

Before the team left to go back to Oahu, Dr. Dhawan came and gave Max a Christmas present- a Star Trek The Original Series Janice Rand action figure. It turned out that their entire fight was because Dr. Dhawan had bought it before Max could buy it at an internet auction, and Max had been sore about it as she was the only piece left in order to complete his collection.

At Danny’s house, everyone complained at the fact that Danny only seemed to have one Christmas album. After decorating the tree, Danny hugged and kissed Grace. Afterward, the doorbell rang, Pua gave Danny a citation addressed to both him and Steve, regarding the tree that they had cut down from the forest reserve. Pua then told him that they would have to pay a $1200 fine and that he had to confiscate the tree. However, as it was Christmas Eve, Pua decided to take it back the next day. Danny then invited him in, and they all, with Kamekona (Taylor Wily) leading, sang “Silent Night”.
