HBO’s ‘The Sopranos’ Creator Clarifies Tony Soprano’s Death [WATCH VIDEO]
While “The Sopranos” bowed out of TV in 2007 on HBO, fans of the show are still hounded by its controversial end. Did Tony Soprano live or die? Its creator, David Chase, has finally issued a statement. Read on to learn more about this news story.
It was a scene no one saw coming. Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) was sitting in a restaurant with his wife and their two grown children, sharing a meal together. All around them things proceeded as usual, and then the screen went black.
To anyone watching, this would seem like the TV’s power died or the network had a service interruption. But then, the credits rolled after a few seconds, so viewers realized the fact: this was how the show is ending, cut to black screen. No one has any clue what just happened. Did Tony get shot? Did the scene indicate that he never saw what was coming? No one got any answers, even from the people behind the show.
Seven years after “The Sopranos” ended, the show’s creator, David Chase, who was always tight-lipped about how the series closed despite numerous debates among viewers, finally issued a statement to address the question: Did Tony Soprano Die?
Chase was doing an interview with Martha Nochimson for the website Vox when the subject of the series’ ending was asked. In the article, Nochimson was definitive in saying that according to Chase, Tony Soprano did not die in the final scene.
But immediately following the report, Chase’s publicist issued a statement to clarify what he said in the interview.
“A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead’ is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of The Sopranos raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer,” said David Chase ‘s publicist in the full statement published on Vulture.
So fans of one of the best drama series of all time are back in the same bind. Tony Soprano could be dead, yet he could still be alive. This is what the series creator wants its followers to take away forever.
And there you have it for the mystery behind the ending of “The Sopranos,” which will remain that way — a mystery. You can watch the controvesial final scene of the series in the video below.
