‘Hunger Games’ Franchise Gifted Us These 5 Things
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” like the rest of the series had some serious social, political commentary beneath the drama and all that action. As the series now finally coming to an end it indeed gave the world some interesting things and thought to ponder about. From contributing positively to everyone’s career involved with the project it initiated a sort of Young-adult genre. The entire series can be credited for revolutionizing the genre. Let’s have a detailed look at the contributions that the series had on our world.
1. YA Movies. The single and biggest contribution of the series indeed is towards this genre. Right after the first film in the series what followed was a wave of YA movies based on similar books with themes ranging from ‘coming of age’ to life in ‘post-apocalyptic world’. Some good examples are divergent and maze runner, both of which are in the way of becoming a franchise in their own right. One of the common themes in the genre is the young people coming to terms with reality and taking charge of their destiny like our own Katniss Everdeen.
2. Good Bye to innocence: “Hunger Games” series pitches the characters in the dark and ugly world of reality show where the participants in order to survive have to kill each other. Isn’t this the reality of our own times, with reality shows pitching contestants against each and us watching and encouraging such shows only highlights our further sinking into moral wasteland. Time to think.
3. Female reloaded: Katniss Everdeen is a problem solver, no hold barred, independent and highly dignified and matured female heroine that was missing from the Hollywood stable for a very long time. Divergent, Jupiter ascending and much highly acclaimed “Jessica Jones” (tv series) are other good examples where ladies are out there to solve.
4 Jennifer Lawrence: Before ‘Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence indeed made a name for herself through many projects, most notably being the highly critically acclaimed “Winter’s Bone” directed by Debra Granik. However no one can deny the legacy of hunger games when it comes to the phenomenon that Jennifer Lawrence is today. The fact that she is an international sensation speaks a lot about the series.
5 Something to think. In our fast paced life huger games kind of makes us think about the quality of the environment and the world that we envision. What kind of future and legacy we are about to leave for our future generation? Will it be the moral wasteland symbolized by the each district in the series or future of hope, courage, truth and just world symbolized by Katniss Everdeen.
