Idina Menzel to Star in ‘Happy Time’ TV Comedy from Ellen DeGeneres
After a successful 2014, which includes winning an Oscar for “Let It Go,” the song she sang for the animated movie “Frozen,” and fresh from singing the national anthem at Super Bowl XLIX this week, Idina Menzel is making another milestone in her career. The Broadway star is set to headline her own TV series, “Happy Time.” The show will be produced under Ellen DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production banner. Read on for more about this news.
As reported on Deadline, Menzel will lead the cast of the sitcom “Happy Time,” where she will play a woman thrust in the public eye, but her famous character will decide that she will have to stop pretending to be happy all the time. The show, which is slated to undergo pre-production this summer, is being eyed for the 2016–2017 slate, where it will be pitched to a network, according to Variety.
“Happy Time” has enlisted Randi Barnes as the main writer, whose credits include working as a scribe on “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return” and “Girl Meets World.” Barnes will also executive produce the show with DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman from Warner Bros. While details are still limited, Deadline said that the series is intended to be filmed using the single camera format.
This is the very first TV show that the actress will lead, but Menzel has previously appeared in TV dramas like “Glee,” where she has a recurring role; “Private Practice”; “Rescue Me” and “Kevin Hill.”
Menzel made her acting debut on Broadway in “Rent” in 1996, but it was in the musical “Wicked” where she has earned much success and fame. She won a Tony Award for her performance as Elphaba in the musical in 2004. A few years after, Menzel was once again honored with a Tony nomination for her performance in “If/Then.”
She branched on to movies after conquering theater, starring in films like “Kissing Jessica Stein,” “Enchanted” and the film version of “Rent,” among others. Menzel also released albums in her long list of achievements. The latest of which, called “Holiday Wishes,” was released in December 2014, topping the Billboard’s chart for that period.
