ITV Renews ‘Broadchurch’ for Season 3
ITV’s hit drama series “Broadchurch” has been given a third season. The announcement was made immediately after the show aired its final episode for the second season last Feb. 22, 2015. Read on for more details about this news item.
As announced by ITV via a press release, the award-winning drama series “Broadchurch” is set to return for a third installment along with its main stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman also signing on. The show, which is written by Chris Chibnail, has successfully kept viewers glued to the television garnering a “consolidated series average” of about 9 million viewers.
“We’ve been overwhelmed that nine million people every week have continued to join us on the twists and turns of Broadchurch. This third chapter has been a glint in my eye for a long time and I’m thrilled to be writing these characters once again,” Chibnail said in a statement published in the press release.
“Broadchurch” season one captured a high of 8.7 million viewers when people became intrigued about the mystery behind Danny Latimer’s death. The small-town storyline, which first ran in 2013, was then adapted for the U.S. audience as “Gracepoint” in 2014.
“Broadchurch” season two followed two years later, premiering with 7.6 million viewers. With the introduction of another plot involving the Sandbrook murders, viewership dwindled down to 5.6 million on average, yet it still had considerable buzz and clamor, particularly from social media netizens.
Radio Times reported the third installment will likely begin filming this summer. However, fans of the show will have to wait a bit longer for the broadcast as its sources say the projected date may be set sometime in the fall of 2016 or the early months of 2017.
The confirmation of the renewal comes as “Broadchurch” finally puts an end to the Miller-Latimer drama. They ended it with a shocking verdict that places Danny’s killer, Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle), as a free man. However, the townsfolk decided to banish Miller from their peaceful town. Meanwhile, Detective Alec Hardy (David Tennant) closed the case of the Sandbrook murders with the help of Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman). With these plots tied up, the third season promises to be a fresh start for everyone involved in the series.
Cast details as well as filming dates for the third season will be announced at a later date. Check back to Movie News Guide (MNG) for the follow up and updates about this series.
“Broadchurch” Season 2 will premiere in the U.S. via BBC America on March 4, 2015.
