According to Deadline, Marvel Studios has been aggressively expanding its superhero movie base with the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe titles like “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Ant-Man” and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” After battling mutants, aliens and robots, Marvel is now ready to take on the supernatural as the studio sets its sights for another superhero movie based on Marvel’s most powerful magician, Sorcerer Supreme a.k.a. Dr. Strange.
Marvel has been in negotiations with actor Joaquin Phoenix to play the role of the enigmatic surgeon turned sorcerer in the studio’s potential franchise. Earlier at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, there were speculations that Benedict Cumberbatch will headline as the doctor, but with these negotiations underway, rumors about the “Sherlock” actor just ended. Marvel had been choosing from its long list, which included Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy and Jared Leto.
Joaquin Phoenix started his career as a child actor and came to wide attention for his portrayal of the character Commodus in the 2000 historical epic film “Gladiator.” The film earned him a nomination at the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, as well as nominations for the Golden Globes Awards, Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Awards and BAFTA Awards. He has also received accolades and nominations for his portrayal of musician Johnny Cash in the 2005 biographical film “Walk the Line.” Aside from acting, Phoenix has also ventured into directing music videos, as well as producing films and television shows.
Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson. Derickson has directed horror and thriller film such as “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” (2005), “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (2008), “Sinister” (2012) and the recently featured “Deliver Us from Evil” (2014). His experience and insights might just bring out the right formula to make Marvel’s first jump to the supernatural world a success. Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote the first draft, but after negotiations, Jon Sphaits has been chosen to rewrite the screenplay.
“Doctor Strange” is based on a famous comic book superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during the early 1960s. Stephen Strange is a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.
