The episode began with the entire English parliament being impressed with Mr. Norrell’s (Eddie Marsen) magic, as he was able to create a fleet of ships out of rain. It confused the French army at the Port of Brest in  Northern France. Norrell then asked the government for help to make English magic becoming respectable again. He also offered to put magical defenses so that the English islands would never be attacked again.

Meanwhile, at a particular house that was built using the stones of the Raven King’s castle, Mr. Segundus (Edward Hogg), who was with Mr. Honeyfoot (Brian Pettifer), fainted on the grounds and saw a vision of a woman in a blue gown, who looked just like Arabella Strange (Charlotte Riley). They were then brought to their senses by Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel). They were amazed at him because he was well advanced for someone who just discovered magic, and because he hadn’t learned from books as he had none except for a book on the Raven King. They then suggested that he apply to become Mr. Norrell’s apprentice.

Meanwhile, Norrell discovered that he kept on seeing The Gentleman with the Thistle-Down Hair (Marc Warren). He also discovered that Lady Emma Pole (Alice Englert) always asked Sir Walter Pole (Samuel West) to dance when the bells rang.

The next morning, Emma told her husband that she was tired of dancing, and discovered that the ringing of bells unnerved her, and caused her to talk about strange things whenever she tried talking about the fact that every night, she danced with the fae.

After Norrell saw her, he summoned the Gentleman who told him that when he said that half of her life was his, he had meant that she was his while she was sleeping. He then offered to help Norrell, who refused to have any dealings with his kind.

Later that night, Stephen Black (Ariyon Bakare) discovered the Gentleman in one of the rooms in the house, and shaved and dressed him properly. As a reward, he was invited to join the dance. The next morning, he discovered that almost all of the servants were resigning as they believed the house to be haunted.

The Stranges then went to see Norrell, and Jonathan greatly impressed Norrell, who took him as an apprentice. Jonathan’s magic seemed to be more innate than his. However, Norrell refused to talk to him about the Raven King and about fairy magic.

That night, Emma became more unstable, and Stephen was summoned to the fairy forest. The Gentleman told him that he was the nameless slave that would one day become their king.

The next morning, while Jonathan helped Sir Walter locate the missing ships, Arabella encountered Emma who tried to talk about the fairies to her but ended up saying something different.

Later that day, Jonathan tried to summon the Gentleman, who brought Stephen with him. The Gentleman then became enamored with Arabella.

Afterwards, Norrell put the magical defenses in place. However, the next day, Jonathan was summoned to help a ship that had run aground on a shoal. He then created horses out of sand in order to set the ship righ, He later accepted an offer to go out on the field in order to help the English army by doing magic on the field. Before he left with forty of Norrell’s books, Arabella related what Emma had told her, and made him remember that Norrell was the enemy he had seen in his mirror months ago.

Later that day, at an auction, Norrell outbid Arabella for a collection of magical books. However, Norrell was shocked to see the Gentleman, who had offered his handkerchief to Arabella as she had cried because she wasn’t able to get the books for her husband.
