Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell Recap: Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
“Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” Season 1 Episode 7 “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell” aired last Sunday, June 28, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on BBC One. In this episode, Mr. Gilbert Norrell (Eddie Marsan) and Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel) raced against time in order to summon the Raven King in order to free Arabella Strange (Charlotte Riley) from the Gentleman with the Thistle Down Hair (Marc Warren), and in so doing, the prophecies foretold in the Raven King’s book were fulfilled. Read on to learn more about the season finale.
The episode began with Sir Walter Pole (Samuel West) resigning from his post, and leaving immediately for Starecross, where Lady Emma Pole (Alice Englert) was fast asleep. Beside her was a letter written by Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel), which her husband read.
Meanwhile, in the realm of Lost Hope, Emma, who still had her wits about, reassured Arabella Strange (Charlotte Riley) that she was helping to free Arabella. She decided to dance with the Gentleman with the Thistle Down Hair (Marc Warren) in Arabella’s stead.
Henry Lascelles (John Heffernan) then came upon Christopher Drawlight (Vincent Franklin). He still had to deliver the box with Emma’s finger with the instructions inside, and a message to Mr. Gilbert Norrell (Eddie Marsan). However, Lascelles decided to kill Drawlight. He threw the instructions away, stole the box, and told Norrell that Strange was coming to kill him. While Norrell fortified his library, John Childermass (Enzo Cilenti), through his cards, realized that Lascelles had stolen something. He got cut in the cheek while retrieving the box with Emma’s fingers. He then left for Starecross as Norrell once again had decided to foolishly not allow him to go and help Emma.
As soon as Childermass left, the tower of black descended on the house, and Strange entered the library. He began to talk about how the Raven King couldn’t stop the fairies from stealing Christian men and women, and Norrell got a shock after he realized that Strange just wanted his help as the curse of eternal night was killing Strange, and now also affected Norrell, and as Strange wanted to simply free his wife from the fairy that had cheated Norrell. Strange then told him that he planned to summon the Raven King as he was the only one who could defeat a fairy. He decided to summon him by calling the “king,” as every part of Norrell’s house had been built upon the castle of the Raven King, and only knew him as their only king.
At Starecross, Pole had Stephen Black (Ariyon Bakare) locked up for serving the fairy. Mr. Segundus (Edward Hogg), then ran to look for a spell to join Emma’s finger with her hand. Childermass, who realized that Emma wasn’t supposed to be brought out yet, tried to stop them, but it was too late, much to Strange’s chagrin.
Childermass then left after learning that Vinculus had been hanged. The Gentleman then appeared and tried to get Stephen to go with him and tortured Segundus and Mr. Honeyfoot (Brian Pettifer). He then blinded Pole and put a rose in Emma’s mouth and told Stephen to kill them all.
Meanwhile, the Raven King appeared, then disappeared in order to revive Vinculus (Paul Kaye) and to change the text written on his body.
Strange then summoned the Raven King back by calling him the nameless slave, and got Stephen instead, who was shot by Lascelles. Angered, the Gentleman brought Stephen back to Lost Hope. He was followed by Norrell and Strange, who discovered that the black tower curse couldn’t follow them into Lost Hope.
Inside, Strange managed to wake Arabella up from her curse, and managed to bring her to Venice. She appeared to the Greysteels after bursting out of the mirror they were given by Strange. Norrell then told Stephen to use his magic against the Gentleman, and stopped him from hurting Norrell. It was after realizing that he had been destined to kill the Gentleman- the king of Lost Hope, which he then did.
Vinculus and Childermass then went back to Norrell’s house only to discover that the tower, along with Norrell and Strange had disappeared, as did all of Norrell’s books, as it had been given as a gift to the Raven King.
Months later, Emma told her husband that she was going to Europe to help Arabella, who was shown her husband’s former quarters in Venice. In the reflection of a font, her husband told her that he would try to come back to her someday, but that she shouldn’t wait for him.
In Yorkshire, Childermass told the men of the Friends of English Magic that they were all magicians again, and showed them the only magical book that remained. It is the book of the Raven King, which he hoped they would all be able to cipher someday.
