On Friday, July 4, 2014, marked the beginning of the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Variety reported that the commencement of the festival started with Mel Gibson receiving the Crystal Globe award for his incomparable contribution to the world of cinema.
Gibson was given a cordial welcome by his fans on the red carpet and by the audience. While accepting the award, Gibson jokingly commented about the trophy, which is an image of a naked woman holding a crystal ball, and said that that was the kind of thing he wanted, the kind of fantasy he always had.
The recipient of the Crystal Globe went on to thank the festival for recognizing his craft, which to him is like telling a story. As Gibson said in his speech, telling stories is the real gratification, especially when he sees somebody getting moved by his performance, when a child’s eyes smile or when the audience gives response to his movies.
However, according to The Guardian, the actor received criticism for receiving the lifetime achievement award from Jewish groups in the Czech Republic. The Federation of Jewish Communities objected to the honor given to Gibson, saying that his film, “The Passion of Christ,” depicted their community in a negative way. The Federation said in a letter that because of the honor given to Gibson, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival becomes an unreliable international award-giving body due to its tolerance to anti-Semitic ideas.
It can be remembered that eight years ago, Gibson was arrested in Malibu for suspected driving under the influence of alcohol and afterwards ranting against Jews.
The organizers, on the one hand, acknowledged the letter from the federation. On the other hand, they defended Gibson’s recognition by saying that the award was given to the actor on the basis of his outstanding performances in films, both as a director and as an actor.
Gibson has not yet given his reaction about the issue.
