Kiefer Sutherland on Doing Another ’24’ Season: ‘I Don’t See Myself Going Back to It’
After doing eight 24-episode seasons and a ninth 12-episode earlier this year of the “24” TV series, Kiefer Sutherland, who played the lead character Jack Bauer, says he’s had enough of doing “24.”
“24” follows the story of Bauer as he solves mysterious, often national-security level cases, with each of the 24 episodes spanning to an hour he spends on the specific case. However, the ninth season, entitled “24: Live Another Day” had only 12 hours/episodes instead of the usual 24, thus leading it to be often called “Season 8.5.”
In an interview with Telegraph, Sutherland was asked if “24” will be doing another season or a perhaps the much-rumored movie. Sutherland replied with,
“Me, I don’t see going back to it. We had set out to do 12 episodes to end the show and deal with some of the past history of the show. It was also an irresistible opportunity to go shoot in England. So for all of those reasons it made sense to do that last season,” replied Sutherland on Telegraph.
Sutherland’s response somewhat confirms “24” producer Howard Gordon’s rather subtle notion of putting the series to rest. In an interview with Yahoo! TV last July, just two weeks before the season finale of Season 9, Gordon was asked of the future of “24.”
“I think right now everyone is sufficiently exhausted from getting through this year at this level, that no one is willing right now to even ask the question. I think in a couple of weeks, when the dust settles, I really hope somebody takes it seriously… So I don’t know, but I think all options are on the table certainly, and I know that a lot of people behind the scenes are willing to consider it,” Gordon told Yahoo! TV.
As of the moment, Sutherland is promoting Sky’s half-hour Christmas special “Playhouse Presents: Marked,” which he will be starring with “24” Season 9 co-star, comedian Stephen Fry. Unlike Sutherland’s other shows, “Marked” is a comedy which involves a regular guy, played by Sutherland, who is deep in debt. Driven to a point, he accepts a job from his neighbor to kill somebody. As he was about to kill his target, he instead meets someone (played by Fry) he didn’t expect.
