The Knick Recap: They Capture the Heat [WATCH VIDEO]
“The Knick” Season 1 Episode 5 “They Capture the Heat” aired on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax. Dr. Thackery and Dr. Edwards had to do surgery together, while Dr. Gallinger dealt with a serious health issue with his baby. Meanwhile, Sister Harriet and Cleary teamed up once again to help a mother who wanted to abort her baby, and it looked like there’s a brewing romance at the Knick. Read on for the recap.
It was early in the morning at the Knick, and Barrow (Jeremy Bobb) was hounded by an emergency. The mobster whom he owed money to had a brother-in-law who needed surgery, and the only surgeons at the hospital at that time were Dr. Thackery (Clive Owens) and Dr. Edwards (Andre Holland). While both were not thrilled to work with each other, they performed the procedure well and saved the man’s leg. This pleased Barrow as well, as the mobster was already ready to shoot them if the surgeons were not able to do it right. Good thing, nothing like that had to happen.
In a rare moment, Thackery and Edwards shared a cigarette together after surgery. This did not make them the best of friends, but they shared a civil moment at least. They engaged in small talk, with Thackery commenting how it’s already warm outside this early in the day, and Edwards remarking that it’s all the buildings surrounding New York, as they seemed to capture the heat. This moment was interrupted by Barrow who thanked Thackery for his work earlier but completely ignored Edwards.
Edwards returned to his clinic at the basement to attend to another patient with hernia. In order to correct a previous procedure, he used silver wire on the surgery this time to ensure that the stitches would hold. Later on, Edwards was called to the Robertson’s home because her mother, who’s employed as the cook, was experiencing stomach problems.
When Edwards got there, Thackery was already working on her mother. While Edwards thought it was appendicitis and that her mother should be rushed to the Knick for an emergency procedure, Thackery thought it’s only a cyst blocking her kidneys. Thackery did a bit of maneuvering and within seconds, Mrs. Edwards felt relief. He was right; she didn’t need any surgery, and everything was alright.
Sister Harriet (Cara Seymour) and Cleary (Chris Sullivan) went to Chinatown where a young mother was contemplating on getting an abortion. But even the sister thought this wasn’t right, as the mother was already seven months pregnant; she could feel the baby kick. Sister Harriet and Cleary instead shared a beer together and talked about this case and the issue of abortion some more.
Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance) continued with her work with the health inspector, conducting an investigation into the homes that had patients or deaths due to typhoid fever. They asked the servants about bathroom habits, food choices and preparations. Will they be able to figure out what has caused the disease to spread and who was the one spreading this?
Thomas Edison’s new invention, the X-ray technology, was the latest to come at hospitals. Dr. Thackery showed the board how this would be good for the Knick, but it was Barrow who had to convince the Capt. Robertson from the board to buy the equipment. But the captain needed more justification for spending $3,000 per machine.
Yet, upon learning that the Vanderbilts donated two machines at an upstate hospital in New York, it was only then that Capt. Robertson gave Barrow the go to buy the equipment. Will Barrow buy a good one or will he take the cut from the budget again and use it for his personal gain?
Dr. Thackery was once again needed at the surgical theater. This time, working with Dr. Chickering (Michael Angarano). It’s another case of placenta praevia. The last time they performed this procedure (in the episode “Methods and Madness” air date: Aug. 8, 2014), the chief of surgery committed suicide partly because it failed. Thackery and Chickering were not able to turn things around and save the baby and the mother too. But they were able to proceed faster than the last. They almost had it. Will they finally catch a break in the next procedure?
So where was Dr. Gallinger (Eric Johnson) all this time? Why was he not around during the surgeries? Turned out, he was in the hospital all along, but he was with his baby. The child contacted meningitis and most likely because Gallinger was too careless about handling a post-surgery case in last week’s episode (“Where’s The Dignity?” air date: Sept. 5, 2014). Will the baby live?
This episode also showed Dr. Chickering boldly asking Nurse Lucy (Eve Hewson) out for dinner. But later, as the day closed, Lucy was seen teaching Dr. Thackery how to ride the bike for the first time. It also looked like the man may be smitten by her too, and she clearly admired and cared for him. Would this become an unlikely love triangle at the Knick?
And that’s it for the recap of “The Knick” Season 1 Episode 5 “They Capture the Heat,” which aired on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax. How are you finding the show after five episodes? Sound off in the comments!
