The Knick Recap: Working Late a Lot [WATCH VIDEO]

The Knick” Season 1 Episode 8 “Working Late a Lot” aired on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax. Dr. Thackery and Nurse Lucy pressed on with their affair, as did Dr. Edwards and Cornelia Robertson. Meanwhile, there’s a surgical convention in New York, and Thackery was upstaged by a certain Dr. Zinberg. Read on for the recap.

Dr. Thackery (Clive Owen) and Nurse Lucy (Eve Hewson) were having a wild time in bed, where having sex meant also indulging in cocaine. The once naïve nurse from the South was already corrupted by Thackery’s addiction. Later, she told him that her father, a preacher, would surely condemn what they were doing. But Thackery reasoned that they were having pleasure, which was not a sin.

Lucy: Will you be there on Judgment Day to make my case then?
Thackery: God’s not watching.

The next day, Thackery arrived at the Knick and hurriedly went to supplies room looking for cocaine. There were out of it. Apparently, because of the war in the Philippines, their supplies were delayed as ships were being sunk.

Thackery’s consciousness slowly started to dwindle. He was not himself while at the board meeting. He needed his fix. Later, Lucy came to him with a few vials of cocaine, just as he was to present the hernia procedure he and Dr. Edwards (Andre Holland) had been working on to a group of surgical masters at the conference. Right away, he injected himself with the cocaine and proceeded to present without any hitches. The doctors were impressed, as Thackery described how he and Edwards revolutionized the hernia operation, which haven’t changed in the past 100 years.

However, another surgeon, Dr. Levi Zinberg, stole the spotlight from Thackery when he presented his new invention:  an Intrascope that would help surgeons to see the insides of their patients better. Unlike Thackery, Zinberg had a pleasant and funny personality, which impressed Dr. Chickering’s father, who was also in the conference.

After the talk, the surgeons mingled at a cocktail party where Zinberg met Thackery’s surgical team. While their exchange was civil, telling each other how impressed they were of one’s work, it was clear that they were competing as to who was the better doctor.

Gallinger: His arrogance is astonishing. Rest assured, this will be the last time we’ll be outshined by a Jew.

The elder Chickering approached Thackery at the cocktail party. He commented that he was looking a bit pale. Was he okay? Anyway, he wanted Thackery to release his son Bertie from his carnival, as he thought Zinberg would be able to mentor him better. He also thought that his son was overworked at the Knick, with hardly any time to meet a wife and build a family.

Thackery felt insulted and told Chickering Sr. that his son was talented, and as his mentor, he already invested a lot in the young doctor. In fact, their next presentation involved Bertie’s work, and his father should expect more from his son.

Later, Chickering Jr. told his father that there’s another reason he doesn’t want to leave the Knick: he’s in love with Nurse Lucy, unaware that she’s cavorting with Thackery.

Meanwhile, Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance) was told by the health inspector that Typhoid Mary has petitioned to be released from the quarantine, citing she was wrongfully imprisoned. At the hearing, Mary said that she wasn’t a criminal, and she was not sick. Dr. Chickering testified that even so, Mary was a carrier, but the judge was siding with Mary, which briefly irritated Bertie because what would a judge know about diseases? However, Mary was released, and later, she was seen being interviewed at a job agency with fake credentials.

Like Thack and Lucy, Cornelia and Edwards’ affair was also ongoing. She went to Edwards’ place after instructing her chauffer to go home since she’ll be “working late.”

Edwards: Aren’t you scared of what we’re doing?
Cornelia: I’m only scared we won’t be able to stop.

Cornelia was still engaged to someone else.

Barrow (Jeremy Bob) sought for donation to fix the hospital up after the riot in the last episode (“Get the Rope” air date: Sept. 26, 2014) from the Catholic Church, but the cardinal refused him. He has to find funding somewhere else.

Dr. Gallinger (Eric Johnson) brought home Baby Grace from the orphanage to appease his wife’s grief and loss. But she couldn’t even be bothered to care for the baby, as the doctor went home one day to find Grace crying and soaking her nappy, while his wife just sat knitting a bonnet for Lilian, their baby who died.

And finally, still short on cocaine, Thackery performed a surgery while under withdrawal. He couldn’t proceed midway through, telling everyone he had a headache, so Edwards took over.  Thackery was seen next at the China town drug pen, where he basked in opium.

And that’s the recap for “The Knick” Season 1 Episode 8 “Working Late a Lot,” which aired on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax. The show has two more episodes before it closes the first season. Keep checking back to Movie News Guide (MNG) for news and updates.
