In “The Golden Lotus” (air date: Oct. 10, 2014), with Thackery (Clive Owen) suffering from cocaine withdrawal, Nurse Lucy (Eve Hewson) did everything to “help” him deal with it. Upon learning that Thackery vandalized a local pharmacy, Lucy found ways to score the drugs for him. She sought help from Ping Wu, who asked for her golden lotus, which refers to having her gorgeous foot in his mouth during a sexual act, in exchange for some opium. She lied to Thackery about how she got the opium. She also raided a German hospital for their supplies. She was bold and reckless, but she didn’t care. All she cared was pleasing Thackery. So that when he asked for “an ocean of cocaine,” that’s what she delivered.
Meanwhile, Dr. Edwards (Andre Holland) and Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance) dealt with a problem themselves. She was pregnant, and she wanted Edwards to do the abortion, as their interracial relationship was something most people would never understand. Having a child together would make it even worse. But when it was time to do the procedure at Edwards’ underground clinic, he couldn’t do it. He could not kill his own child.
Dr. Gallinger’s (Eric Johnson) wife, Eleanor, has completely lost her mind. She accidentally killed baby Grace, so the doctor had no choice but to send his wife to an institution, as she was no longer safe on her own. Though it was hard to watch his wife pleading, Gallinger facilitated the transfer and administered her sedative.

In the final episode of “The Knick’s” first season, Thackery will have to collaborate with Dr. Zinberg, the brilliant doctor he met during the surgical conference. They are to work together on a research about blood transfusion, but guess what? Thackery is so paranoid and so high strung that in his bid to beat his research partner and solve the mystery first, he pushes himself over the edge.
The Knick will have another crisis at the hospital, and the board will be called in to vote on the matter. Lucy will seek Dr. Chickering’s (Michael Aragano) help about a serious matter. Will she finally reveal to him the truth about her twisted relationship with Thackery?
Cornelia and Edwards, on the other hand, will reach a crossroads. What will they do with the baby? Will they make good their plans to move to France and raise a family there?
