‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Co-Director Talks About The Franchise’s First Magical Villain
“Kung Fu Panda 3” co-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson has revealed that the third installment of the franchise will feature a villain with supernatural abilities. Read on to know more details.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Kung Fu Panda 3” co-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson revealed that the villain would be voiced by J.K. Simmons and will have supernatural abilities. The director discussed the character of the villain in more details and gave out spoilers for the story.
The Rotorscopes website reported that even though the supernatural thing has always been the important part of the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, it has played limited role in plot development and the theme of the story. In “Kung Fu Panda 3,” the supernatural will come back with a vengeance and try to upset the lead character’s world through magic and mayhem. The lead character Po’s Kung Fu skills will be pitted against the supernatural talents of Kai, the bull and much chaos will ensue.
Nelson described the destructive powers of the new villain stating, “He’s somebody that’s beyond Tai Lung, beyond Shen.” Guillermo Del Toro, who happens to be the film”s producer, has stated time and again that Kai will be the most formidable and menacing villain yet. “He’s a villain that Po is completely ill-equipped to face.”
Nelson told the press that they drew up charts to come up with the character of the new villain. “I drew a little chart that had a picture of Tai Lung next to Po, a picture of Shen next to Po, and a picture of this new villain coming in.” It made them realize that they needed a newer more intimidating type of villain to scare Po. Hence, Kai character will have supernatural powers and even more intimidating to take on the fighters.” And so Kai was born – the villain who is going to keep Po on his toes all through the third movie.
Kung Fu Panda 3 will be shown in theaters on January 29, 2016.
