The season finale closed the action packed and tumultuous second season, and then some, as it, as promised, delivered a shocking cliffhanger that no one saw coming. Also, a recent interview with the show’s showrunners was released, who addressed several questions left over from the second season, and teased what will be happening next in the third and upcoming season. WARNING: This article will contain spoilers for the second season finale and for the upcoming third season. Read on only to learn more about “A More Perfect Union” and about the upcoming third season.
The episode began with President Jeffrey Michener (Mark Moses) sending out a broadcast transmission that urged America to believe in him and the USS Nathan James. He told them to meet them at Vicksburg, Tennessee, and at St. Louis, their last stop, as they planned to establish the nation’s new capital from there.
The plan was for Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) to give the crew of the USS Nathan James booster shots that would allow them to spread the cure, and would remain contagious for five to eight days.
Later, Michener tried to get Kevin McDowell (Patrick Brennan), Sean Ramsey’s (Brian F. O’Byrne) third in command to surrender, but he refused. Instead, he pushed through with his plan to infect those gathered at the College of Memphis, dressed in Navy uniforms, to get the people to mistrust the Navy.
However, the turn out in Vicksburg turned out to be low. It was due to the fact that Master Chief Russell Jeter (Charles Parnell) had warned, just in case, his in-laws not to go just in case. However, Jeter apologized for his actions.
Meanwhile, Tex Nolan (John Ferguson-Pyper) went off in search of his daughter Kathleen (Jade Chynoweth). He learned that her mother was dead from her stepfather, with whom he shared the cure with.
Thankfully, Tex managed to discover McDowell’s plan after helping out one of the sick that McDowell had taken, and together with Lieutenant Daniel Joshua “Danny” Green’s (Travis van Winkle) team, managed to take out McDowell’s men, and brought McDowell into custody.
Tex also managed to reunite with his daughter, Kathleen.
Later, during Michener’s inaugural ball in St. Louis, Commander Thomas “Tom” Chandler (Eric Dane) was appointed as Michener’s Chief of Naval Operations.
Meanwhile, the rest of the crew remembered the ones that they lost during their journey, and Danny proposed to Lieutenant Kara Foster (Marissa Neitling).
Afterwards, at the hotel, Rachel bid goodbye to Chandler. She had been pardoned and was on a mission to spread the cure to the rest of the world. Chandler then told her to find him when she got back.
However, Rachel never made it out of the hotel as she was shot by one of McDowell’s men, who quoted John Wilkes Booth as he shot her- “Sic Semper Tyrannis!”
According to the interview that The Hollywood Reporter had with showrunners Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane, Rachel’s fate is still unclear. However, it was mentioned that she is fighting for her life, and that the reason behind this was to show that the Immunes are still big threats to Michener and the crew of the USS Nathan James.
However, it is still unclear whether the imprisoned McDowell had anything to do with it.
The showrunners also teased that the third season will be much larger in scope as it will show America under Michener’s administration, and their efforts to manufacture enough of the cure to cure the entire world.
