Law & Order: SVU Recap: Agent Provocateur
“Law & Order: SVU” Season 16 Episode 11 “Agent Provocateur” aired last Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. In this episode, the Special Victims Unit investigated an assault case, after teenaged Madison Baker was found in an alleyway in a half-opened suitcase. This led them to the world of Hollywood scandals and betrayals, as rising star Scott Russo (Shiloh Fernandez) was accused of committing the act. Read on to learn more about this episode.
A teenage girl wearing a coat entered a taxi cab outside a hotel. She then put on some make up and drank some alcohol. In the next scene, the girl was taken from a bed, placed in a suitcase and left in an alleyway, half opened, where an officer found her. At the hospital, they managed to revive her, and the next thing she saw was Sergeant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), calling her by her name.
When she fully woke up, the girl, Madison Baker (Madison Grace), was introduced to Olivia and Detective Nick Amaro (Danny Pino), who asked her if she remembered what had happened to her. She then told them that she had left her uncle’s apartment to see “Wicked” with a friend. The taxicab driver, who was Middle Eastern, pulled over, climbed in the back and made her drink some pills. She had gone over to her uncle’s for the weekend, as her mother was in Atlantic City.
At the alleyway where she was found, the officer who responded told Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola (Ice T) and Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi Jr. (Peter Scanavino) that he had found her after responding to a 911 call made at three in the morning. However, there had been no witnesses. They were then interrupted by a phone call from Olivia, who told them to question the uncle as to why he hadn’t noticed that his niece was missing.
At the uncle’s apartment, they found that Madison was supposed to see “Wicked” with her uncle but told him that she would go with a friend. However, they discovered that Madison had left the tickets inside the guest room. The uncle then admitted that he didn’t check up on her during the night as he had been out with a “friend” until 1:00 a.m. His boyfriend, who was in his room, confirmed it.
Olivia then informed them that the toxicology screen had found alcohol, Xanax, another drug and traces of someone having used a condom. After checking her phone and social media records, they discovered that she had last used her phone at around 2:00 a.m. at the Howell Hotel and that she had exchanged Instagram selfies with up and coming actor Scott Russo (Shiloh Fernandez), who was currently at the Howell Hotel as he was in the city to promote his new film.
At the hospital, Olivia went to talk to Madison, who had been reunited with her mother. She then admitted that she was at the Howell Hotel as Scott had invited her to come. After a few drinks, she claimed that she had blacked out, and the next thing she remembered was that she was at the hospital.
In his suite, Scott filmed the entire thing for his art project and told Carisi and Fin that he had left her at the booth after learning that she was underage. He claimed that they had just talked and had had some drinks and admitted that most of his fanbase were teenage girls. However, they were interrupted by his manager, Lydia Lebassi (Patti LuPone), who assured them that he had nothing to do with anything of the sort. He then told them to talk to his co-star, Skye Aderson (Jeremy Jordan), whom he claimed had seen him leaving the bar early. Because of this, Carisi and Fin tried to pull the security footage from the hotel, but they told them that someone from the New York Police Department already got the entire hard drive. However, they were able to provide a very unhelpful picture of the impersonator walking out of the hotel.
Afterwards, Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba (Raul Esparza) told them that in order to make the case, they needed someone who can put him at the hallway, as Madison might have been paid off, or she was just truly obsessed with Scott.
Carisi and Fin then paid a visit to Skye, who told them that he may or may not have seen the two of them leave together. All he knew was that after he had looked away for a moment, when he looked back to where they were, they were gone.
At the squad room, Nick showed everyone the preview for Scott’s new movie “Falsely Accused,” where he portrayed a man who had been falsely accused of a crime that he didn’t commit. His lawyer, Skye, helped him get the justice he deserved. Both Nick and Carisi felt that “they were all playing us,” as it fit the modus operandi of a publicity stunt. However, they were able to get two waiters who saw Scott taking bodyshots off of Madison, but they were not sure yet if they had left together. Before they could do anything else, LMZ, a tabloid show, aired hotel footage of Madison kissing Scott at the bar and of her going to Scott’s hotel room. They then went to the art gallery where they arrested Scott.
In the interrogation room, he denied everything and told them that he had not been in his hotel suite the entire evening as he had been with Catalina Soren (Teresa Moore), his married co-star, whom he was having an affair with. He also told them that he had answered the door when Madison knocked but turned him down. However, they could not contact her as she was on her way to New Zealand to film “The Catalyst.”
After talking to Madison again, she told them that she had followed Scott to his room, took some of his pills to calm her nerves and slept with him afterwards. She then told them that he had been gentle and that Scott would never hurt her. However, Barba told them that they still might not have a case as she kept on changing her statement. What they needed was the entire video.
They then went to LMZ and served Lenny Simmons (John Pankow), the host of LMZ, as he was withholding evidence as he had knowledge of criminal activity — someone had impersonated a police officer. He was then told to show up in court that Friday. However, as he did not show up, he was held in contempt, which allowed Olivia and Nick to arrest him. They then decided to put Fin in his cell as an undercover in order to get him to talk. He then mentioned to Fin that Lydia had given him the footage so that he could air the “PG 13 stuff.”
They then picked up Lydia after Lenny cooperated with them, who told them that Scott had called her up at 1:00 a.m. as he told her that he had a problem. She had then bought a suitcase, told him to stuff Madison in it, and she herself had gotten rid of all the evidence that Madison had been there. Because of that, they arrested Scott, who maintained that he was innocent.
They were all then surprised when Madison came in and told them that she had slept with Skye, who comforted her after she was turned down by Scott and that she had lied beforehand because she didn’t want Scott to know that she had cheated on him. However, as she had kept on changing her statement, many found it hard to believe her.
At Skye’s hotel room, they arrested Lydia and Skye, just before they were about to leave for New Zealand, as he got a chance to be in “The Catalyst” movie that Catalina Soren was in. However, Lydia assured Skye that everything was going to be alright and told them that it had been her idea.
At court, because of the new evidence and Skye’s confession, the judge let Scott go. Outside, he held a mini press conference for the media, and Olivia began to wonder if they had been right to let him go as she noticed that he looked at Madison, who was there with the other fans and who had slightly winked at him while smiling.
