‘Law & Order: SVU’ Recap: ‘Maternal Instincts’

“Law & Order: SVU” Season 17 Episode 6 “Maternal Instincts” aired last Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 9:00 PM on NBC. In this episode, Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) was placed in a difficult position after realizing that one of suspects involved in their current case, in which a famous flautist assaulted one of the violinists with him on tour, turned out to be her fugitive sister, Kim Rollins (Lindsay Pulsipher). Meanwhile, Sergeant Mike Dodds (Andy Karl) experienced his first day on the job as Liuetenant Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) second in command. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Anton Krasnikov (Zach McGowan), a world renowned flautist, meeting up with a girl named Savannah, who, was actually Kim Rollins (Lindsay Pulsipher), after a performance.

The two went up to his hotel room, and the next scene showed Kim stealing money and a silver flute from him.

Meanwhile, Detective Amanda Rollins’ (Kelli Giddish) mother, Beth Anne Rollins (Virginia Madsen), threw a baby shower for Amanda.

The next morning, after Chief Deputy William Dodds (Peter Gallagher) dropped off his son, the new sergeant, Sergeant Mike Dodds (Andy Karl) off, Rollins told them that a violinist named Alessandra Bay (Elizabeth A. Davis) had been found on the floor of her hotel room.

Dodds, Olivia, Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola (Ice T) and Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr. (Peter Scanavino) went over to the hotel, where Alessandra told them that Anton had assaulted and raped her. However, Anton had no recollection of this whatsoever, and later realized that he might have been drugged, as he had woken up with no memory of the events of the past night, and had discovered that the girl that he had been with had stolen his money and his flute.

After putting out an alert for the flute, and while waiting for the DNA results to come back, Dodds found footage of Anton banging on doors while going around the hallways buck naked, which pointed to the fact that he may have been drugged. They then sent him to the hospital to get DNA evidence, just in case.

Meanwhile, Amanda received footage of Anton’s flute being sold at a pawn shop, but began making excuses, and asked Fin to stall for her, as the footage revealed Kim selling the flute off.

Amanda then decided to meet up with Kim, in the hopes of getting her to come in voluntarily, but was interrupted by their mother, who decided to get them cocktails, while Kim tried to blame Amanda for everything that was happening to her, especially as her pimp, Slice, who was now being leaned on by Carisi and Dodds, kept on texting her to come in, as she had also stolen his money.

Afterwards, just as Dodds ran facial recognition and got a hit on Kim, as she still had an outstanding warrant on her, Amanda and Fin came clean to Olivia, who insisted that they figure out a way to bring Kim in.

Meanwhile, as the DNA proved that Anton had raped Alessandra, he was charged with raping her.

They then used Beth Anne to call up Kim, and told them that Kim was at Amanda’s apartment, as she had hidden Kim’s money in the floorboards.

At Amanda’s apartment, Olivia managed to catch a furious Kim who blamed Amanda for everything, just as she was fleeing, and Fin and Carisi took a bleeding Slice to the hospital, as Kim had stabbed him in the groin.

During interrogation, however, Kim insisted that Anton had given her the flute, and that everything was Anton’s fault.

The next day, at court, Anton was charged, pending trial by jury, and Kim, who seemed to have wormed herself into her lawyer’s, Lorenzo Desappio’s (Jason Cerbone) heart, asked him to plead not guilty for her, which meant that all of the charges, including the charge for murdering her boyfriend, would be up for trial.

Afterwards, Amanda tried to talk to her mother, who scolded Amanda for abandoning her family, and told her that she would only come back to New York for Kim’s trial.

All of this was a little too much for Amanda, whose blood pressure spiked, which caused a dizzy spell, leading Fin and Carisi to bring her to the hospital to get checked, then brought her back home.

Meanwhile, Dodds reassured Olivia that anything happened at Special Victims Unit, would stay within the department.

The next day, Amanda visited Kim at Rikers Island, where Kim told her that she was going to testify against Anton so that she wouldn’t have to go to trial, in order to spare Amanda the extra stress, especially as Desappio and the District Attorney knew about their complicated history, and all of Amanda’s skeletons in the closet. Also, Kim told Amanda that she believed that Desappio was going to propose to her, which meant that she would be alright.
