A brand-new season is on its way to grace television screens with both old and new faces — thanks to the new and returning shows that will appear on the small screen. One of those lucky shows that have stood the test of time is returning for its sixteenth run on NBC — “Law & Order: SVU.” Read on to learn more about what will happen in the upcoming season.

According to a previous Movie News Guide (MNag) article, there will be a new addition to the Special Victims Unit team in the person of Peter Scanavino, who will portray Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi. Based on the report from TV Line, he will also be the new Acting Commander.

Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) will be laying low a little bit for this season because of her new role as a mother to  Baby Noah. This will be a welcome rest for the detective, as TV Line reports that she will not be dealing with a lot of emotional trauma this season, as she had to deal with a lot in the fifteenth season, during the William Lewis (Pablo Schreiber) story arc.

Meanwhile, Detective Nick Amaro (Danny Pino), who will be going undercover in season 16, will face family troubles of his own. He will be faced with dealing with a long distance relationship with his daughter due to his new assignment.

Family might just be the recurring theme of this season, as Detective Amanda Rollins’ (Kelli Giddish) mother will be making an appearance. According to showrunner Warren Leight, Rollins’ mother will “prove to be a real piece of work.”

And that’s the latest update on what will be happening on NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” Season 16. For more news and updates, including spoilers and recaps, on “Law & Order: SVU” and other television shows, keep following Movie News Guide (MNG).

“Law & Order: SVU” Season 16 will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on NBC.
