Law & Order:SVU Recap: Parent’s Nightmare

“Law & Order: SVU” Season 16 Episode 22 “Parent’s Nightmare” aired last Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on NBC. In this episode, the team raced against time to rescue a kidnapped boy, but quickly found themselves in a situation after discovering that there was more to it than just a kidnapping. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Sergeant Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) dropping off baby Noah at the daycare. As soon as she got to her office, Internal Affairs Detective Ed Tucker (Robert John Burke) greeted her and told her that he had told Police Plaza that she had filed for her lieutenant’s exam as they wanted a lieutenant to lead the team. He also suggested that she pick out her second, who would have to take the sergeant’s exam.

Meanwhile, Dana Farhidi (Brooke Bloom), who was already running late to bring her son, Owen (Kaeden Ruparel) to school, asked a neighbor and a co-parent to bring Owen with them to school. Later, a Hispanic man claiming to be a friend of Owen’s nanny picked him up and put him inside a black van. This caused Dana, who had arrived extremely late to pick her son up, to become panicked.

While Dana looked for phone, she told them that she was recently divorced and that her ex-husband, Sam Farhidi (Navid Nagehban) had been upset as she didn’t want him to take Owen to Iran with him.

Detective Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr. (Peter Scanavino) then got Dana’s phone from the yoga studio, and discovered that the man who had taken Owen had called several times, and Owen himself had called her up as well. Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola (Ice T) and Detective Nick Amaro (Danny Pino) then talked to Sam. Afterwards,  the two were shown some pictures taken from a security camera, where Dana recognized the kidnapper as Javier Rojas (Frankie J. Alvarez), the boyfriend of Owen’s nanny, Fabiana Caldera (Carmen Cabrera), whom they brought in for questioning so that they would be able to find Javier.

After a while, Javier called Dana via a video call, showed her that Owen was okay, and demanded to meet Sam later that night at a specific address with the ransom money of thirty seven thousand dollars. Later that night, with the SVU team watching, Sam managed to get Owen back. However, as Javier had bolted, Nick and Carisi managed to corner him in a nearby alleyway.

Afterwards, Javier told them that Dana had set the entire thing up, and had hired him to kidnap Owen.

At the hospital, Owen told Olivia that he knew that Javier had come to their house several times as he would help his mom fix the plumbing, and told them that his mother often lost his phone and that when Dana wasn’t picking up the calls, Javier had said that she was supposed to pick it up. Later, they discovered that Dana had talked to Fabiana and Javier about her financial difficulties, and that Fabiana and Javier both knew that Sam paid all of Owen and Dana’s bills. However, Fabiana told them that she didn’t hold anything against Dana for cutting her nanny hours as she had other jobs and was going to school.

As Javier claimed that Dana had texted him the instructions on what to do when they kidnapped Owen, they managed to get a hold of the text messages, which Dana claimed that she had never seen before. They then discovered from Owen that his father would come and visit him sometimes and would often look at Dana’s phone when she left it. They also found it strange that the ransom note was so specific, especially after discovering that Dana was the one who had filed for divorce, and as she had accused Sam of hiding the same amount of money as the ransom payment from him. Afterwards, Javier admitted that it was Sam who had set the entire thing up.

Dana, who couldn’t believe it, agreed to wear a wire and to confront Sam about the fact that she was still a suspect. There, she discovered that he had done that to wake her up, so that she would pay more attention to Owen as she was always late and as she didn’t take the responsibility of raising Owen seriously. She then told him to stop talking and showed him the wire. Nick and the others then went in and arrested Sam.

The next morning, Dana was devastated to learn that Sam was going to be in jail for six months and told Olivia that Owen needed to be with Sam as he needed him more than he needed her. Olivia then told her to get her act together, and allowed the two to leave.

Afterwards, she told Fin to “hold down the fort” as she had to go somewhere. Fin then revealed to Carisi and Nick that Olivia wanted him to take the sergeant’s exam as the higher ups wanted her to become a lieutenant, but he told them that he didn’t want to take it.
