Live ‘Star Wars’ in New 360 Degree Immersive Video: Drive Speeder Through Star Destroyers in Jakku
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” might still be a ways off, but now you can ride Rey’s speeder through the deserts of Jakku yourself. Well, on facebook, at least. Read on to become the next human podracer in the “Star Wars” universe.
While J. J. Abrams is really secretive about anything to do with his new “Star Wars” movie, he does seem to manage social media pretty regularly to throw the fans some interesting tidbits. The latest, and perhaps the most interesting, being the new 360-degree video on the “Star Wars” facebook page. Zoom through the wastelands of Jakku in Rey’s speeder, click and drag to check out the local color, look through the vast hulks of imperial Star Destroyers. There is even the cute new robot BB-8, who resembles a brightly colored soccer-ball. What more can a “Star Wars” fan ask for? (Lightsabers. The answer to that question is Lightsabers)
For those new to this canon, Jakku is the new planet we’ve been seeing in all the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” trailers, the place where the Millenium Falcon gets chased by the TIE Fighters, and most likely the place where a panting John Boyega shows up as the mysterious ‘Finn’ in the upcoming movies. Despite the video, we were unable to determine how many moons this planet has, and whether one of them is actually a Death Star in disguise.
Made by the famous Industrial Light & Machine’s X-Labs, this is part of a new drive by facebook to popularise 360 degree videos, for which it has partnered with the likes of Disney, Go-Pro and National Geographic. Screen Rant has helpfully updated (sadly non-interactive) youtube version of the video, for those mysterious people who do not have a facebook account.
