Looking Recap: Looking Down the Road
“Looking” Season 2 Episode 4 “Looking Down the Road” aired on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on HBO. The episode is heartbreaking. Read on to learn more.
The show has managed to put itself into focus with last week’s episode but somehow lost the momentum in last night’s episode. A lot of scenes presented by the show seems to be asking it’s use in the show, making us feel like we want to join in and give words of encouragement.
Patrick is shown to be talking to someone on the phone. He has spent another night with Kevin, and it seems like they’re enjoying their time together. Patrick shares his story of how kids used to tease him about being fat. Patrick, being a generous lover, compliments Kevin. But all of this is treated with sense of nervousness that seems to echo the dynamic of their affair.
We switch to Agustin and Eddie, who have also hooked up. Then the scene switches to Doris and Dom and about kickstarting his restaurant. Dom has made a snide remark about the superficial aspect of gay movies and TV shows.
Clearly, “Looking” is trying to be not that kind of show. It surely doesn’t want to be an iteration of “Queer of Folks.” But what the show fails to get is that even though it reflects the real professional and personal lives of a select group of gay friends in San Francisco, it fails to highlight a sense of aspiration for the viewers. The depiction of scenes are so real that one could think that they could recreate their own scenes.
The only saving grace of this episode is Agustin and Eddie’s scene at the LGBT shelter. It shows the real situation of the LBGT community in general and the LGBT teens specifically. It pulls Agustin’s hearts, and we feel that he wants to help out and work with these kids. We hope that the show focus this angle more, and it also helps in the development of Agustin’s character from struggling artist to teenagers.
