‘Madam Secretary’ Recap: ‘Lights Out’

“Madam Secretary” Season 2 Episode 8 “Lights Out” aired last Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) , Mike Barnow (Kevin Rahm) and White House Chief of Staff Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek) teamed up in order to oust National Security Advisor Craig Sterling (Julian Acosta) from his position in order to avoid a full-on war with Russia regarding the Air Force One hack. Meanwhile, Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) began to worry about the safety of his asset, Captain Dimitri Petrov (Chris Petrovski) after he suddenly goes dark after returning to Moscow on assignment. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode opened in White House Chief of Staff Russell Jackson’s (Zeljko Ivanek) home, where he answered work calls while exercising on the treadmill. However, he suddenly stopped after discovering that Admiral Ellen Hill (Joanna Day) was planning on resigning as the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

At the Situation Room, Director Ephraim Weir (Clifton Davis) informed them that they had just spotted the Air Force One hacker, George Lasco or Dash, entering Cambodia.

Nationals Security Advisor Craig Sterling (Julian Acosta) and Russell suggested that they bring in a SEAL team in order to extract him. However, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord’s (Tea Leoni) and Cybersecurity expert Oliver Shaw (Kobi Libii) suggested that it should be handled quietly by the CIA as they needed to question him, and as they needed the data from his equipment, which President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) agreed to.

Afterwards, Russell met with Sterling, convinced him that he didn’t like Elizabeth. He suggested that Sterling recommend a certain General Reeves to replace Hill as the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He then met up with Elizabeth and Mike Barnow (Kevin Rahm) and told them that Sterling hadn’t taken the bait to recommend Reeves yet.

Mike then decided to stir things up a little by asking Senator Parisi (Jason Kravits) his schedule the previous week, which was when he had met up with Sterling who had got him to try to help him to stop the lifting of the Cuban Trade Embargo.

Spooked, he went to Sterling, who then recommended Reeves to replace Hill.

This caused Mike to ask a reporter friend to call Sterling to confirm whether it was true that he had been bribed by Reeves, as Reeves was obviously dirty.

As he didn’t have a good alibi to give the reporter who claimed that he had received the bribe from Reeves when he met with Parisi, he went to Russell who told him to handle and contain the situation. He did it by shredding some pages of his planner, which was a mistake, as it contained White House meeting notes and was in violation of a particular act.

The next day, Elizabeth and Russell had him picked up, and suggested that he resign in a dignified matter instead of getting hauled to jail, which he did.

Meanwhile, the CIA team discovered that Dash had been killed via polonium poisoning, which was the preferred method of assassination by the Russians.

However, before retaliating, they decided to wait for Shaw to decrypt Dash’s laptop first in order to make sure that Russia was truly behind the Air Force One attack.

While this happened, Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) became increasingly worried about his asset, Captain Dimitri Petrov (Chris Petrovski), who had suddenly gone dark after arriving in Moscow.

However, it turned out that he had to be vetted thoroughly so that he could serve as General Doroshevich’s (Zenon Zelenivich) personal aide, which allowed him to take pictures of President Maria Ostrov’s (Angela Gots) military plans.

He then contacted Henry using the phone of a prostitute, and dropped a USB drive full of Ostrov’s aggressive military plans, along with a handwritten note from Dimitri that said that he was out. Henry then guessed that he was going to try to go to Sweden to join his sister.

However, just as he lost his tail and managed to get on a train, the entire Moscow went dark, as Dalton had just agreed to retaliate against Russia by shutting down the Kremlin after discovering that Dash had been paid by Russia to hack Air Force One.

Back at the State Department, Elizabeth informed the Russian Ambassador that they were at war with each other as of the moment.
