Read on to learn more about this episode.
Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) gave a speech and the charity fundraiser dinner for the Society of Global Aid. It had been written by her speechwriter, Matt Mahoney (Geoff Arend), which became a hit. Because of that, his old college friend, Zach (Frankie J. Alvarez), who ran a successful blog, congratulated him, and asked if he could do a feature on him soon, which he agreed to.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth was approached by Gary Coomer (Dennis Boutsikaris). He told her that his congressman, Larry Ames (Brennan Brown) had told him to approach her at the dinner in order to get her attention to a potential mass suicide of American citizens. It included Coomer’s daughter Christine (Libby Woodbridge), who were members of a cult called The Covenant of John in Bolivia.
The next day, both Elizabeth and Dr. Henry McCord (Tim Daly) wondered out loud as to who Stephanie “Stevie” McCord (Wallis Currie-Wood). She had been going to work early, and because she had been dressing up more lately. Afterwards, Henry insisted that Elizabeth bring her anti-anxiety medication just in case. It was even though she did have a small episode after her morning meeting, she didn’t take her medication.
During her morning meeting, her staff informed her that the situation with Bolivia was delicate. It was after a Drug Enforcement Agency raid happened without the Bolivian government’s full sign off, and as it yielded disastrous consequences. Aside from a meeting with the Bolivian ambassador, she also asked for Ames’ schedule as he was making too much noise about the situation. She then asked him testily to step down, and then later told her staff to put him on the no-fly list to Bolivia.
She also met up with Bolivian Ambassador Marian Dominguez (Selenis Layva). She told her that her government still had to be convinced that they needed to take action regarding the cult.
That night, Stevie tried to sneak her new boyfriend out as he picked her up for their date. Henry and Elizabeth stopped them from leaving right away, and decided to talk to him. Her new boyfriend turned out to be her boss at the microloans office, Arthur Gilroy (Josh Hamilton). She was almost forty, and was a divorcee with a young daughter, which did not really agree with both of them.
Meanwhile, Zach interviewed Matt, which got the attention of Michael “Mike B” Barnow (Kevin Rahm). He reminded him the next day that his job was to make Elizabeth look good, and not himself.
Elizabeth was then informed that Ames managed to sneak into Bolivia and into the compound of the cult and was being held hostage; and that the cult had a lot of potassium cyanide in stock for their mass suicide. The President’s Chief of Staff, Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek) then came in to tell her that they were going to send in the military. It was precisely what they had been trying to avoid.
After talking with Henry, as he was a religious scholar, Elizabeth asked President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) if Henry could try to talk the cult leader, Reverend Wesley Finch (Glenn Fitzgerald) out of the mass suicide. The president then agreed upon the condition that Henry would go there to talk to Finch in person.
In the situation room, Elizabeth quickly became uncomfortable about the situation. Henry complied to go in without an earpiece or a camera on him. He then began talking to Finch regarding faith, and was slowly earning his trust. However, he didn’t account for Finch’s deputy. He put a knife to Henry’s throat and tried to make Finch see that Henry was misleading him. Because of that, Admiral Ellen Hill (Johanna Day) had her sniper take out the deputy. In the confusion, Henry was able to get the location of Ames from a dazed Finch. However, as the military came in to get Henry, Finch informed his followers, including Christine that the time had come for their mass suicide. Because of this, thirty-seven Americans, including Christine killed themselves.
Back at home, Henry, traumatized by this, became afraid that Stevie was becoming brainwashed by Arthur’s beliefs, which led to an argument. Elizabeth then had to reassure him that she was just trying to have a mind of her own and that she wasn’t getting brainwashed by Arthur at all.
