Married” Season 1 Episode 9 “Halloween” aired on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on FX. Lina had to be in the other side of town to meet up with an old friend, so she asked Russ to buy their daughter’s Halloween costume. Russ had to bring AJ to rehab with Jess, but AJ wasn’t willing to do it. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.

Lina (Judy Greer) was her usual grouchy self when Russ (Nat Faxon) arrived home from work. She had the worst day, which was marked by having to deal with their dog’s pooping problems. Aside from this, their eldest daughter, Ella, was being indecisive about what costume to wear for Halloween. They both would be so busy hours before the kids will go trick-or-treating, but they have to settle this. Since Russ wanted to play the good cop with the kids, could he take care of the costumes?

The next day, as Lina headed for a long drive to meet one of her old girlfriends, whom she has not seen in a long time, Russ headed to Jess (Jenny Slate). The two were going to bring AJ (Brett Gelman) to rehab. While at Jess’ place, Russ witnessed Jess and her husband Shep (Paul Reiser) bickering, as couples usually do. Jess was going to have a “work drink” thing later, which meant she may miss trick-or-treating with family. Later, with Shep out of earshot, Jess revealed that what she really does at night at work was to join wild parties. Shep would always be in bed at 9:00 p.m., which the younger Jess found boring.

Russ knew the feeling of lying to one’s spouse all too well, so he told Jess that he’s been giving Lina excuses about staying late for work too. But the truth was, he’s been hanging out with his younger co-workers. He and Jess quite agreed that sometimes, lying was necessary in marriage. The two, however, thought that they would be really bad together if they were an actual couple. Russ noted that that’s why Jess married Shep because Shep gave her life order.

Anyway, they got to AJ’s house, and he was delaying things, obviously not yet ready to be brought to rehab. AJ snuck out of the window and ran away from his house and his friends, who thought he was packing his stuff in his room. But the two eventually caught up to him. Russ had to make a quick detour to the dollar store, though, to get Ella’s pirate costume.

It was important for Russ and Lina to get Ella the right costume this year, as this was going to be their daughter’s last trick or treating. Next year, when she’s 13, she will have other plans for Halloween for sure. Jess helped Russ pick out the stuff, but her choice for a pirate outfit was just too sexy. Where were all the “classy pirate” clothes?

After getting what Russ needed, AJ asked if they can go to his place of work first so he can properly say goodbye to everyone. While there, he actually got drugs from his assistant. When he learned that the partners of his firm were having a meeting without him, he went ballistic and then lost it completely, attacking everyone at the board room. Later, Jess and Russ were called by his assistant to pick AJ up at a restaurant, where they learned that he was going to start his own firm again, as he seemed to have lost his post at work. The two convinced AJ that it was really time to go and get himself checked in.

While this was going on with Russ, Lina was at a hotel coffee shop to meet her friend, Eva. They had planned this days before because Eva was going to be in town with a really tight schedule. But Lina soon realized how tight this was because Eva arranged a business meeting within their own meet-up.

So Lina decided that she should just go home, seeing how her friend was really busy.  Eva went after her and apologized. Lina was in tears, obviously ready to break down and needed a time with her girlfriend. Eva suggested that they go get a drink instead, and there, Lina unloaded about her marriage. Eva comforted her and even invited her to stay over at her hotel. But it was time to go trick-or-treating, so while torn about having to spend and enjoy her own time with a girlfriend, Lina thought that the best thing to do was to go home.

She got to her family just in time. The kids and Russ were ready to head out. Ella, however, asked if she could go trick-or-treating with her friends and some guys, and her parents understood that it was time to let their soon-to-be teenager be. Despite the daily problems in their marriage, Lina was thankful Russ was there, and the two walked the streets holding hands as their two younger daughters went from house to house for candy treats.

Meanwhile, Jess was able to find her husband and son about to go trick-or-treating as well, and when she got out of the car to join them, Shep said that perhaps it would be better if she just stayed in the car. Jess was wearing the slutty pirate costume.
