Married Recap: The Old Date [WATCH VIDEO]
“Married” Season 1 Episode 8 “The Old Date” aired on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on FX. Russ and Lina visited their former Venice neighborhood and reunited with an old friend. Find out what happened in our recap below.
The episode opened with Bernie (John Hodgman) inviting Russ (Nat Faxon) to a strip club. He’s dressed in scrubs because, apparently, the strippers love the idea of someone who’s a doctor. Russ said he couldn’t go because he has a date with his wife.
Russ and Lina (Judy Greer) were in Venice Beach, the place they once lived before they had kids. This was where Russ took his wife on a date. The two decided to check their old store first and took a trip down memory lane. When they got there, they saw that the shop was already closed, as in no longer operating. Lina said that this was kind of a relief because she always wondered if Russ blamed her for letting him sell the place.
Lina: “You always wondered what would happen if we didn’t sell. Now you know.”
But when Russ checked the area out further, he found out that the shop didn’t close; it moved to a larger location. Earlier that day, someone came by Russ’ place of work wearing a bag with a logo he designed for his former store, which has become a huge deal now. Lina asked if Russ wanted to check out the new location. But Russ said they should just go ahead with their date, eat and forget about the whole thing.
By this time, Russ was already feeling a bit off. They went to an old restaurant they used to frequent, and Russ became even more upset when the owner did not recognize them. They used to be his loyal patrons.
Lina thought that Russ was getting pissed for a different matter altogether. Was it about the shop?
Lina: “Just say it. I ruined your life. I made you sell the shop. “
Russ: “We had to do it. We were pregnant and schools are better at the valley.”
To get it done and over with, Lina said they should just go and check out the new store location.
The shop they sold was bigger, better and had more shoppers. Bruce (Ike Barinholtz), their former partner, did well with it. But then, they also found out that Bruce was actually not the owner anymore. He sold the store after he got shot during an attempted robbery. So Russ and Lina went to visit their old friend and business partner at his home.
Bruce blamed Lina for getting shot because she convinced Russ to move out and sell half their stake of the store. As a result, he didn’t have anyone help him at the store for a while, so he had to work that night he got shot. But there were plenty of good things going for Bruce the couple learned and envied: he lived in a beautiful house with his Asian wife, and they have the money to support his medical needs. They also realized that Bruce was moving around using a wheel chair and that he couldn’t even enjoy having sex with his wife. They can’t ever have kids.
Did this make Russ feel better? Not so much. What really made him feel better was if he took the very first longboard that used to hang at their former store. It was hanging on Bruce’s bedroom now. Sneakily, Russ tried to take this despite his wife’s protest.
Russ: “He has everything! I moved to the valley! I got a vasectomy!”
He also implied that he’s the manager at a place he doesn’t enjoy working. As Russ was dismantling the longboard, Lina distracted Bruce. Eventually, though, Bruce heard noises and caught Russ.
Bruce: “All you had to do was ask, man.”
Russ and Lina went home to the valley with the longboard tied to the roof of their car.
Meanwhile, Bernie and AJ’s (Brett Gelman) strip club night out didn’t go as planned because AJ took a detour and headed to a funeral. Who died? The mother of Jerry, the new husband of AJ’s ex-wife. Jerry wanted them out of there, so AJ’s ex-wife had to talk to him. Yet he wouldn’t leave until AJ’s ex-wife confessed something private and sexual. Whatever it was, AJ got what he needed and happily left the place with Bernie for the strip club. Bernie who was wearing scrubs the whole time, on the other hand, received a lot of medical questions from the funeral guests. They thought he worked at the hospital.
