Masterchef Junior Season 2 Recap: Grandad Gordon
The latest episode of “Masterchef Junior” Season 2 involved some oldies as the title suggests, “Grandad Gordon.” Read below for the full recap.
We all know that everything becomes better with age, and when it comes to food, it’s delightful. The mystery box challenge today started with the judges Gordon, Graham and Joe dressed like old people. The kids squealed with so much happiness and even made fun of the judges. After the judges’ awesome introduction, they asked the kids to open their mystery boxes. Their ingredients includes dried, aged New York strip steak, two-year aged Iberico ham, smoked salmon, black garlic, preserved lemons, 12-year aged balsamic vinegar and five-month aged bleu cheese. Aside from these ingredients, our little chefs could also get some stuff from the pantry box to help with their dishes.
Another surprise came when the judges allowed the kids to talk to their “favorite old companion” via Skype. They need to ask for advice and tips on what they choose to cook. Then the kids were given an hour to whip out the best dishes from the finest ingredients in this episode.
Jenna was the only contestant who had the guts to make a dessert out of her ingredients while the others stuck to making entrees — most of them salmon and steak dishes.
The judges loved Jack’s Pan Seared New York Strip with Cauliflower Couscous and Fennel Salad.
The second dish that they tried was Riley’s Pan Seared New York Strip with Smoky Beef Ramen Broth, and it was clear on Gordon’s face that it was an awesome dish.
The third dish that they tried was Andrew’s Grilled New York Strip with Fennel Salad and Smashed Potatoes, and just like the other two, it was awesome.
However, the judges had to pick one, and the winner of this round is Andrew.
Andrew had the advantage now. He was asked to pick one out of three choice ingredients that the entire group will use. His choices were rattlesnake, snapping turtle and alligator. Andrew chose alligator. It was surprising that many of the contestants have already cooked alligator meat. Here are the dishes that the kids made:
Jenna – Alligator Curry with Jasmine Rice and Raita
Mia – Fried Alligator Tacos with Watermelon Salsa and Chipotle Mayo
Kyler – Grilled Alligator with Mushroom and Pepper Rice
Nathan – Alligator Chili with Lime Sour Cream
Cory – Alligator Stir-Fry with Fried Egg
Jimmy – Alligator Fajitas with Guacamole
Nathan, Cory and Jenna’s dishes were the ones that the judges loved while Kyler, Mia and Jimmy didn’t do well this round. In the end, Kyler and Mia were sent home and now they are down to 10.
