Matt Damon Reprising ‘Bourne’ Role

Matt Damon has told E! News that he will be filming another movie for the “Bourne” franchise in 2015. The movie is in the early stages of development and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2016. Paul Greengrass will be helming the project. Greengrass also directed the last two installments of the franchise, “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum.” Read on for further details.

The announcement came when the actor and his co-star, Ben Affleck, were doing a red carpet interview with E! on Friday night. Affleck slipped.

“Well, [Damon’s] going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I’ve just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness,” Affleck told E! News.

Following the surprise disclosure, Damon said, “Yes, next year. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out.  Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

Damon rose to popularity and critical acclaim with “Good Will Hunting,” a screenplay he co-wrote with Affleck. The film was released in 1997, and it earned Damon Best Actor nominations. He also appeared in Steven Soderbergh's “Ocean's” trilogy as part of a stellar cast that included the likes of George Clooney, Catherine Zeta Jones and Brad Pitt.

He is best known for playing Jason Bourne in the film series based on the action-thriller novels of the same title. He did three films for the series but refused to work on the fourth installment, “The Bourne Legacy.” Jeremy Renner starred in the film instead, playing the role of another agent. Damon said that he would only do another “Bourne” film if Greengrass returned as director.

In an interview with Deadline, Greengrass said that he “agonized” over the idea of directing another “Bourne” film.

“I owe Universal and that franchise a great debt, and your instinct is to want to serve the studio. But you get to a place where the desire to serve the studio conflicts with your own desire to move on and stake out new ground,” Greengrass told Deadline.
