Men in Black 3 Top the Box Office
Will Smith proves once again that he has the power to topple The Avengers and grab the Box Office leadership. The 43 year old superstar has been absent from the big screen since 2008. He brings back one of his old franchises, which manages to overtake The Avengers in the Box Office. Aside from Will Smith, the sci-fi comedy features Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and a plethora of aliens. Men in Black 3 got $55 million on the first three days of the Memorial Day weekend.
The Avengers dropped to second place after three weeks on top. It got $37 million in its fourth weekend, which is higher than the opening weekend earnings of all but five films this year, which are The Vow, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, The Hunger Games, and MIB 3.
After 24 days of release in the United States, the Marvel superhero movie is now fourth on all-time domestic list with $513.7 million. It nears third placer Dark Knight. The Avengers is also fourth worldwide with global box office receipt totaling to $1.3 billion. It is just behind the final Harry Potter movie, Avatar and Titanic. Avatar earned more than twice that of The Avengers so far.
Men in Black 3’s total three day total was less than the opening numbers for Smith’s I Am Legend and Hancock. It is also far from the opening weekends of Independence Day, the first two Men in Black movies, and I, Robot.
Industry observers have predicted Men in Black 3 to get around $90 million in its opening weekend. IT managed to get $122 million overseas but it is still far from its reported $300 million budget. According to a survey made by CinemaScore, 54 percent of the weekend audience was male and 56 percent were over 25 years old.
