Both the public and paparazzi are anticipating who is going to win this year’s Ruth Ocumarez Award. Read on for further details.

Ruth Amelia Ocumárez Apataño was born 1983 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She is a Dominican beauty pageant titleholder, actress and model. Raised in Santo Domingo, Ocumárez became a celebrity in her homeland by becoming the first woman of primarily African legacy to represent the Dominican Republic in Miss Universe.

Due to her dark complexion and personality, she was given the soubriquet “La Diosa de Ébano” by the Dominican mass and media. She truly embodies the soubriquet, which means the Ebony Goddess. At the Miss Universe 2002 pageant, which was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ocumárez was highly predicted by several publications and experts to make it to the semifinals. Her preferential treatment was widespread.

However, she did not make it, causing netizens and bloggers to coin the term the “Ruth Ocumárez Award” to signify a pageant contestant who seems guaranteed to be a finalist, but does not make it to the cut. Unfortunately, she did not make it to the top 10, and Oxana Fedorova won the crown. That year was dubbed as the 2002 blackout as not a single black delegate made the top 10 first cut.

The past contestants who “received”the Ruth Ocumarez Award include: Eva Gonzalez (Spain, 2003), Oleksandra Nikolayenko (Ukraine, 2004), Shermain Jeremy (Antigua & Barbuda, 2005), Erin Mcnaught (Australia, 2006), Doukissa Nomikou (Greece, 2007), Ingrid Rivera (Puerto Rico, 2008), Karla Carrillo (Mexico, 2009), Rima Fakih (USA, 2010), Deborah Henry (Malaysia, 2011), Bodine Koehler (Puerto Rico, 2012) and Paulina Krupinska (Poland, 2013).
