Tom Cruise also described the villain played by Sean Harris as “lethal”. Cruise said that it would be a chess match between Ethan and his enemy as he has already been a powerful villain in Mission: Impossible.

Cruise said, “There’s always been a bit of conflict between the CIA and the IMF, and Alec in this is really dropping the hammer and looking at the things the IMF has done.” McQuarrie further said that Benji and Brandt are now working for the CIA after it absorbed IMF. The head of the CIA wanted to bring Ethan in to have him answer for the previous things he has done in the other Mission: Impossible movies.
