Mixed Reactions on How I Met Your Mother Finale
The “How I Met Your Mother” (HIMYM) finale was aired on March 31, 2014 on CBS. The much-awaited episode “Last Forever” received mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, leading to the question: Was that really how it ended? Seriously?
Gone are the Monday nights when we would see and hear Barney say “Legen—wait for it—dary!” But, did the show itself had a not-so-legendary ending? We mentioned not-so-legendary because Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) ended up with Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders). If you have not seen the episode, proceed reading with caution.
Yes, you got that right. Ted and Robin got together in the end. This is what happened. The hour-long episode showed Barney marrying Robin and Ted meeting Tracy (Cristin Milioti), “The Mother.” After three years of marriage, Robin and Barney got divorced. The theory that “the-mother-is-already-dead” after the “Vesuvius” episode turned out to be true. Ted and Tracy got married and had kids. In the process, Tracy got sick, which was not revealed in the episode. She eventually died. Penny, Ted’s daughter, helped him realize that all along, he has loved her Aunt Robin. By this time, it has been six years since Tracy has died. And before you know it, Ted was on Robin’s window, with the blue French horn he has stolen for her.
Some fans were happy, some were not. Some thought it was just “fine,” not even close to legendary. It was kind of weird hearing Ted say, “And that, kids, is how I met your mother,” but he ended up with another woman. Oh, well, twists are part of TV anyway, so why should we even be surprised?
Meanwhile, Craig Thomas, one of the creators and writers of the now defunct show, aired his sentiments on Twitter: “We did a finale about life’s twists and turns and that is not always what happens…but THANKS!”
On another post, he mentioned: “Seriously – no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU…you were with us. We love you.”
Here are what some HIMYM fans have to say about the epic twists of “How I Met Your Mother’s” finale.
After nine long years, we bid goodbye to Ted, Lily, Barney, Marshall and Robin. Who knows? We may be saying hello to “How I Met Your Dad.”
