In this episode, Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) is presented with several choices- to join the society or to join Evil Corp, or to let his drug supply keep flowing or not. All of these, Elliot soon discovers, pointed him to an ever more fundamental questions- is he in control or not and if he was just going to walk away from actually doing something or not. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode picked up from where it left off. Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) facing Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom) and eleven lawyers from Evil Corp. There, Tyrell offered him a job with Evil Corp as the head of the Cyber Security Decision. He dismissed all of the lawyers after Elliot told him that he would think about it.
Tyrell then told Elliot that it would be just a matter of days before he was to be officially made Evil Corp’s Chief Technology Officer. He told Elliot that they would be handling their cyber security from within. It meant that AllSafe would go under as Evil Corp was their biggest client. Elliot then declined and was given a card to call just in case.
Back at his apartment, he noticed that Shayla (Frances Shaw), his dealer of withdrawal medication, was being harassed by a gangster. Later, after taking some of his drugs, Elliot decided to hack Tyrell. However, after discovering that it had been too easy, he decided that it was a trap and destroyed all of his memory cards, sim cards, and computers.
The next day at work, Gideon Goddard (Michel Gill) decided to give him a raise, and showed him that fsociety had sent a video in which one of their demands included releasing Terry Colby, who was the leader of fsociety. Because of this, he decided to cut all ties with the group. After work, he ran into Angela Moss (Portia Doubleday) and her boyfriend Ollie Parker (Ben Rappaport), who invited him out for an evening.
However, this was easier said than done after discovering Darlene (Carly Chaiken) in his shower. After leaving his dog with Shayla, who lived next door, Darlene gave the men in black who were following Elliot the slip, and brought Elliot back to Coney Island, where he was praised for his work.
There, he learned that naming Colby as the leader of fsociety had been done to draw attention away from them. Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) then told him that Elliot was going to use his AllSafe security clearance to hack into a gas pipeline so that it would burst, which would cause an explosion which would destroy its next door neighbor, Steel Mountain- the backup data center of Evil Corp. However, Elliot began to refuse as that would cause innocent people to get hurt. Mr. Robot then told him that this was really a matter of whether Elliot was willing to just stand by or if he was willing to actually do something.
At Shayla’s apartment, he found the gangster from earlier, Fernando Vera (Elliot Vera), who was high. He then told Elliot that Shayla was his and implicated that he had done something to her. After he left, Elliot rushed into the bathroom to help her out. Later, a bruised Shayla told Elliot that she had no choice, as he was the only one who could supply her with Elliot’s withdrawal medications.
After thinking about it, Elliot quit cold turkey and reported Fernando to the cops, which later led to his arrest.
He went then to his therapy session with Krista Gordon (Gloria Reuben). He talked about how he felt that he wasn’t in control, which was similar to when they talked about his father, who also had those same issues. After yelling at her, Krista asked what was wrong with him as he was falling back into old habits.
Meanwhile, Ollie discovered that the CD just kept on getting spit out of his computer. He decided to cheat on Angela, who was worried about Elliot.
Elliot then went to Mr. Robot, who was sitting on the railing on top of a rocky beach, and decided to tell him his plan, which involved no one getting hurt. Mr. Robot then told him that he was back in if he told him about his father. Elliot then told him that he and his father had been close and that he had lost his job one day because he had leukemia, which he wasn’t supposed to tell his mother. However, as his father kept on getting more and more sick, he told his mother. His father felt betrayed and pushed an eight-year-old Elliot out the window, giving him a broken arm, and didn’t look at him again. Mr. Robot then asked Elliot if he ever thought about what his father felt that night. If he thought pushing him, it wouldn’t be a good idea. Before Elliot could say anything, Mr. Robot pushed him off of the railing and onto the beach.
