Mystery Girls Recap: High School Mystery
“Mystery Girls” Season 1 Episode 5 “High School Mystery” aired on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at 8:30 p.m. on ABC Family. This case brought Holly Hamilton (Tori Spelling), Charlie Contour (Jennie Garth) and Nick Diaz (Miguel Pinzon) back to high school, as they investigated the annual Senior Prank at West Beverly High. Read on to find out more about the case of the week.
In this week’s episode (Episode 5 “High School Mystery”), the Mystery Girls are visited by Mr. Frost, Holly Hamilton’s old high school principal. He asked them to conduct an investigation to figure out what the annual Senior Prank would be and who the perpetrators were. He was retiring, and he did not want to go out in utter humiliation.
As the Mystery Girls started planning, Holly revealed that she was never able to finish high school or attend her senior prom as she was filming a movie at that time.
Charlie went undercover as the gym teacher in order to infiltrate the football varsity, while Holly went undercover as a student, instead of a French teacher as they had originally planned, in order to get close to the popular girls in school.
Holly wasn’t received warmly at first, but a spat with Charlie’s gym teacher alter ego allowed her to gain the friendship of Gretchen, one of the most popular girls at school. Holly became ecstatic as she got a second chance at experiencing a normal high school life, and she was happy as Gretchen seemed to like her for who she is and not because she is famous.
Meanwhile, Coach Contour pushed the football team hard as she ordered them to do more exercises than usual. She found out that most of the team was upset with the principal as he had expelled star quarterback Fred Herring, which would cost the team a bid at the State Championship.
During lunch, both Holly and Charlie went through the athlete’s things, and they discovered the plan for the senior prank was — to coat Mr. Frost with glue and feathers while he is standing on the podium — in Gretchen’s notebook.
In order to prove Gretchen’s innocence, Nick and Holly broke into Gretchen’s locker, where they found several large cans of glue and a bagful of feathers. Conflicted, Holly agreed to go with getting the truth out.
During the school assembly, Charlie presented a made-up award to Gretchen in order to get her to stand on the podium, where the glue and tar were supposed to fall. Holly confronted Gretchen who left the gym in a huff, only to find herself greeted by the very same glue and feathers that was intended for Mr. Frost. As payment, Holly asked the principal for her very own diploma, which he refused to give her.
Before Holly bid goodbye to the halls of West Beverly High, Nick revealed to Holly that the reason why he likes her isn’t because she is famous but because of something that she said on an Entertainment Tonight interview years back. When asked what the key to her success was, she had answered, “Don’t let anyone tell you who you are, live your own truth.” Those words encouraged Nick to come out that night — one of the best decisions he has ever made in his life.
Back at the office, Nick and Charlie gave Holly the graduation she has always wanted, complete with a printed out diploma, a pink-tasseled graduation cap, a short speech and a pictorial.
Today’s episode struck a wonderful balance of simple mystery solving and light hearted, good-natured fun and warm hearted feelings. The mysteries they solve aren’t as suspenseful as “CSI” or “Nancy Drew,” but it has its own charm, in its own unique way, and each episode brings about realizations for the characters, who we can’t wait to see grow and develop as the episodes go along.
