Nabors Marries Partner in Seattle
Veteran television actor Jim Nabors has married his male partner of 38 years. The actor said the marriage does not change a thing about their longtime relationship, but he wanted the relationship to be formally acknowledged.
The 82-year old Nabors said he wanted the relationship to be legal. Nabors married Stan Cadwallader, his 64-year old partner and former Honolulu firefighter. Nabors said the two met in Hawaii in 1975 and have been together ever since.
The couple flew to Seattle from Honolulu for a short wedding ceremony at a hotel. A judge married the two inside a hotel room. The judge was a friend of the couple and had driven to Seattle from Olympia.
Nabors acknowledged he was not an activist but is adamant that marriage is the right of anyone and that every person alive should have the choice of who they want to be with for their lifetime.
Nabors said he has also been open to friends and co-workers about being gay, but did not acknowledge it to anyone in the media prior to now. He said it was not because he was ashamed of knowing, it was just because it was so personal.
Nabors said that his partner started working for him many years ago, including taking care of all of his business affairs. Nabors said his partner was also his best friend.
Nabors was an overnight success when he first appeared as Gomer on The Andy Griffith Show in 1963. His popularity as a lovable gas station attendant led to a spinoff known as Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., which was on television for five seasons.
