Is it really possible that one could juggle family life while solving crimes? Well, Laura Diamond can (try)! NBC takes a breather from the serious police procedurals and putting more of a family “spin” on it. The network introduces “The Mysteries of Laura” starring “Will & Grace” lead actress Debra Messing in a light comedy-drama series for its 2014 Fall TV schedule. Aside from Messing, the series also stars Josh Lucas (“Sweet Home Alabama”), Janina Gavankar (“Arrow”) and Laz Alonso (“Avatar”). Read on to find more about NBC’s “The Mysteries of Laura.”
The upcoming light procedural drama is developed by Jeff Rake with Carlos Vila and Javier Holgado, the creators of the Spanish TV series “Los Misterios de Laura.” It is executive produced by Rake, McG, Greg Berlanti and Aaron Kaplan through Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions and Kapital Entertainment.
According to Deadline, “The Mysteries of Laura” was picked up alongside upcoming dramas “Allegiance”, “Constantine,” “Emerald,” “Odyssey” and “State of Affairs.” Several comedies will join “Mysteries of Laura” including “A to Z,” “Bad Judge,” “Marry Me,” “Mission Control,” “Mr. Robinson,” “One Big Happy” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
“Mysteries of Laura” will start with the motherhood of Laura Diamond, a brilliant detective in the NYPD. She became a mother of a set of rule-breaking twin boys. She now wants a divorce from another cop named Jake Broderick (Josh Lucas), who was the father of their kids. Unfortunately, Jake doesn’t want to sign the papers despite cheating on her.
Laura, on the other hand, will have her own nemesis at the police station in her co-worker named Meredith (Janina Gavankar). Laura was considered as the precinct’s favorite among the others and it will continue to heighten Meredith’s rage.
Unfortunately, things continued to go awry for Laura. Her already crazy life has given her a scrambled schedule between being a detective and a mother of two boys. She will also learn that her cheating husband will become her boss in the NYPD. Good thing is that Laura has found her “partner-in-crime” in Billy Soto (Laz Alonso).
“Mysteries of Laura” will mark Messing’s return as a lead star in her NBC roots. Messing previously starred in the highly-acclaimed miniseries “The Starter Wife” and in the musical-drama “Smash” before it was cancelled after two seasons. She also had a few film-starring roles in “Along Came Polly” and “The Wedding Date.”
Moreover, Messing shared with Huffington Post her upcoming role as a soon-to-be-ex-wife with two twins. She shared that she and other modern working mothers can relate to her character. She also pointed out the difference between her role as Laura over her previous roles in “Will & Grace” and “The Starter Wife.”
“Laura to me is an everywoman. She’s trying to do it all on her own and she’s trying to be the best at everything she does. You see her failing and succeeding from hour to hour. To me, that’s real life,” said Messing in the Huffington Post article.
