As NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) and NCIS Special Agent G Callen (Chris O’ Donnell) went over to the extraction point where they would meet the CIA asset they were supposed to protect, Ella Desai (Parminder Nagra), they reminded themselves to be on their guard as they knew that India’s best, Jemadar Thapa (Ernie Reyes, Jr.) had been sent to bring Ella back home to India. However, as they squared off against each other, Sam noticed that there was a sniper on the opposite building, and got shot near the heart, causing him to go into surgery. Thapa then informed G that the sniper wasn’t his.
That same morning, NCIS Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Los Angeles Police Detective Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) had their first fight after Kensi started saying that she felt like they were moving too fast with their relationship. However, before they could say another word they were informed of what happened, and went immediately to their headquarters, where Kensi showed concerned for G, who was not taking this well. Deeks then reunited with Thapa, who was a good friend of his, as this was now a joint task force with India.
According to Thapa, he was sent to bring Ella, a scientist in their nuclear program, alive, despite the fact that she could be killed for trying to betray her country. In exchange for her intelligence regarding India’s nuclear program, they offered her citizenship and a job as an analyst at the CIA. Deeks then told Thapa that the sniper might have been their backup plan, and told him that he was giving his handlers “too much credit”, and deduced that either Ella or Thapa might have been the target of the sniper. G, who didn’t trust Ella, told them that while they checked out where the sniper had been, he would be interrogating Ella as he knew all the tricks in the book when it comes to being a double agent as he had been one before.
Meanwhile, Assistant Director Owen Granger (Miguel Ferrer) and Operations Manager Henrietta “Hetty” Lange (Linda Hunt) watched as Sam went into surgery. Owen then expressed his concern about how Hetty was doing, but she didn’t reply.
While Kensi confirmed whether the sniper had taken the shot from the fifth floor, Deeks asked for some advice from a surprised Thapa as the last time they had met, the two hadn’t been together yet. He then told him that all new couples move too fast before the relationship truly becomes real. Afterward, as he hathd let slip that he knew Deeks’ nickname for Kensi, she took revenge by asking his advice about their fight, in which he just decided to listenOn
At the fif floor, they discovered that the sniper had been a Gurkha, as he had written ballistic algorithms that were invented by Thapa, and was used by trained Gurkha’s only.
At the boat shed, G told Ella that since Sam had died on the operating table, the agency was starting to rethink her deal. In order for her deal to still push through, he told her to write down all the numbers, and coordinates of all the nuclear warheads in the program, and left her there. Outside, he learned from Owen that Sam was still being operated on.
On the way back to the warehouse which was being kept secure by two police officers, Thapa told them that once he had met up with Ella, that he was supposed to meet up with an asset whom he would contact once he had Ella. He had done that, only to discover that the asset’s cellphone was disconnected. He then began to think that maybe his handlers had enacted a back up plan since he didn’t want to kill Ella. This meant that other Gurkhas were at large in the city.
Back at the boatshed, Ella demanded to speak to her handler, Agent Doug Emmerich, but G told her that he needed more so that he could find a way to make sure that her deal went through. He then told her to stop lying to him. At that point, Owen intervened and sent him out. Outside, G learned through Eric Beale (Barrett Foa) that Emmerich was on his way to finalize the deal and to collect Ella.
Back at the warehouse, they discovered that the police officers had been killed by Gurkhas. Inside the warehouse, they fought seven of them off, only to discover that they had been driven to the center of the warehouse, where there were several gasoline tanks. This meant that they had walked into a bomb, and that a man inside the warehouse would remotely detonate it, and hide inside the container there. However, before he could do this, Kensi managed to throw a knife to his heart. After Thapa talked to him, they discovered that he was an ex-Gurkha, and that the target was him.
Back at the boatshed, G informed Ella that she was lying as he knew that the count had redoubled as he had successfully infiltrated their program and got the exact tally of warheads twice- one in 2008 and last year. Because of this, he didn’t believe her. However, before he could say anything else, Emmerich arrived and told G to get out of the room. Thapa then asked to speak to her as he wanted to know why he had been betrayed, and had to be restrained by Deeks as he lunged at Ella in an attempt to get her to tell him why he was being targeted.
Afterwards, at the gun range, he told Deeks that he knew that everyone had an “expiration date”, and that he didn’t know what would happen when he got home. He then told Deeks that for him, home wasn’t just a place anymore, but feelings, like a smile, and that one just needed to be ready when one’s expiration date had arrived. Afterwards, Eric informed G that Sam had woken up at the hospital, and was asking for him.
Before leaving, G told Hetty that he didn’t trust Ella, and that even though it seemed clean and logical on paper, it could also be that it wasn’t, and that Ella had come in order to infiltrate the CIA by setting things up to look like she was a valuable asset, what with Thapa under orders to bring her home. If a random group killed Thapa, then everything would go as planned. However, Hetty and G knew that it would be hard to change the CIA’s mind now, and Hetty was wary about G’s relationship with the CIA as of the moment because of what had happened.
At the hospital, after the doctor and nurse left Sam with his teammates and Thapa, he informed them that before he had been shot, he had noticed that Ella had placed a tracking device on Thapa. Then Eric called to inform them that one of the nurses there was an imposter was the real nurse had been found dead, they realized that they were going to be under attack by several ex-Gurkhas. Deeks, Kensi and Thapa managed to fight off the first wave, and G left Sam’s side for a bit in order to save a nurse that was taken as hostage. While G wasn’t in the room, the fake nurse entered and tried to kill Sam. Thapa then came in and killed her, but she managed to fatally shoot Thapa. Afterwards, Deeks tried to get him to stay awake, but he told his friend that he knew that his time was up, and told him to look for him in “a smile”, as he would be there, waving back at Deeks.
At the boatshed, G told Ella that Thapa had been awarded posthumously with the highest military honor in India because he had tried to fight against a group of rogue spies, which Ella was part of. He then told her that the only thing that would save her know is a list of the names of all of the members of their ring.
At the office, Kensi asked if Deeks was okay, and the two reconciled after Deeks suggested that every once in a while, they meet up after work, which came as a relief to Kensi. As she smiled, he told her that her smile was perfect, and that he had remembered something that Thapa had said about smiles. She then told him to go home, but he told her that he realized that he already was home.
