New Trailer and Poster for ‘Cymbeline’: Shakespeare again adapted for modern settings
Ethan Hawke and director Michael Almereyda have teamed for an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s all-time classic tragedy “Cymbeline”.
The story, in its original form, follows the King of Celtic Britain who reacts violently as he discovers that his only daughter Imogen has secretly married a court follower named Posthumus. The story seems simple and conventional, but Almereyda has taken the core concept to the next level and puts in it a rather unexpected new entity – the violent criminal underworld of American biker gangs. Along with Ethan Hawke, the first trailer for Cymbeline also shows off Ed Harris (Gravity), and his biker queen, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil 6).

It’s not the first time when Almereyda and Hawke are working together to transplant the words of the great poet into a contemporary setting, they also attempted it thirteen years ago when they joined together for an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic play “Hamlet”. Though the resultant film hailed as visually impressive but it was considered almost deaf in translating the tone of Shakespeare to a different cultural context.
That said, Cymbeline requires very skillful handling to harmonize the 17th century dialogue with diamond-smuggling bikers. But if the production is successful in managing this dramatic gamble, it could really pay off in spades. Let’s see how they pull off this bold experiment!
Also starring Dakota Johnson, Anton Yelchin, John Leguizamo, and Delroy Lindo, Cymbeline doesn’t yet have an exact release date, but the film is expected to hit theaters in 2014.
