Paul Bettany Talks About His Dual Roles in ‘ Avengers: Age of Ultron’

Paul Bettany has kept his silence when it comes to his upcoming role as The Vision in the much-awaited “Avengers: Age of Ultron” pic, but the actor-turned-director has finally spilled some info regarding his android character's appearance. Read on for further details.

While on Dubai for the Dubai International Film Festival where his directorial debut for “Shelter” is screening, Bettany talks with The Hollywood Reporter (THR) about his upcoming role as the synthezoid Vision.

“It's still a secret. I think all will be revealed very shortly – It's a secret I've kept for about three years, which is really hard, especially with three kids. I'm contractually obliged not to talk about it,” Bettany told THR.

"J.A.R.V.I.S will be there and so will The Vision. But I simply can't tell you anymore,” he added.

So far, Marvel has revealed very little information about the newest addition to the superhero line-up. His small appearance in the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” poster that premiered during San Diego Comic-Con this July. Moreover, it seems that Marvel and Disney are determined to play the character close to their chest. In fact, when a leaked marketing art showcasing The Vision surfaced a few weeks ago, Disney and Marvel had it quickly removed.

The “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is the eleventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will follow the events of the original film. With S.H.I.E.L.D.’s abolition on “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and the Avengers needing a hiatus from stopping threats, Tony Stark creates Ultron, a self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence, who can assess threats and control Stark’s Iron Legion. However, things go awry as his plan quickly backfires when Ultron decides that humans are the main enemy and sets out to eradicate them from Earth. The superhero team will confront newcomers Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, as well as, the Vision.

The original cast will be suiting up to reprise their respective roles: Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, Hayley Atwell, Thomas Kretschmann and Stellan Skarsgård  reprise their roles from previous MCU films as Maria Hill, Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Peggy Carter, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker and Erik Selvig. Claudia Kim was cast as a scientist and friend of Tony Stark, while Andy Serkis is playing an undisclosed role in the film. James Spader plays central villain Ultron. Avengers’ co-creator Stan Lee is set to make a cameo appearance.

Paul Bettany, who voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. (Tony Stark’s AI butler) in previous films, will now play the synthezoid Vision, an android who is able to control his density, which enables him to phase through walls, fly or have a diamond-hard near invulnerability.  The Vision will be joined by Magneto’s twins, Pietro Maximoff and Wanda Maximoff/Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen respectively.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is scheduled for release on May 1, 2015 in North America in 2D and IMAX 3D.
