The middle chapter of the Hobbit trilogy “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” will undoubtedly be the biggest movie of the holiday season. The movie stars an unassuming hobbit Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, who leaves the comfort zone of his hobbit hole and embarks to face the large world of monsters and men full of dangers and risks.

The director Peter Jackson offers a series of production diary videos, that show the tail end of production and also offer a preview of what’s coming next afer Bilbo and the dwarves reach their final destination.

Here’s the more than 8 minutes long production video for The Desolation of Smaug:

We can also have a look at the film’s eponymous dragon, and then the Lonely Mountain’s interior set which is revealed to have used 1.8 tons of gold (probably not real gold). With all that around, it really looks to be a very fun place to work!

And if you think the film to be a little slow to get started, then Jackson also has a reason for it as he says, “We want to kick into this movie with a lot of urgency, just like the race is on.” However, with the substantial showdown with a big beast to get through, The Desolation of Smaug seems to be pretty action-packed movie which will will cover all the core events of the original novel.

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel “The Hobbit,” the second movie in the Hobbit trilogy will star all of the major human characters, including Luke Evans as master archer Bard and Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit theaters on December 13th, 2013.
