Peter Mayhew a.k.a. Chewbacca talks about ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega
Any avid Star Wars fan will be tuned in to any news even remotely connected to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” If they are as tuned in to the film as they should be, then they would know that Han Solo and Chewbacca are making a comeback. Peter Mayhew, who plays the now iconic Wookie, dishes some info about working again with Ford and the new generation Star Wars stars.
The recent wave of promotional materials for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” reveal that Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his trusty companion, Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), will not only be making an appearance in the seventh film of the franchise but will also have a significant role in it. So what was it like for Peter Mayhew to be back as Chewbacca, acting alongside Ford once again and being back in the Star Wars universe?
“Harrison’s one of the guys. We’ve been friends for a long time, and he’s always been about giving advice and talking things through. He’ll ask what you want to do, and he’ll tell you how he wants to do it, too. He’ll say, ‘No, let’s try [the scene] this way… don’t look over there, look over here’. Just little things. He’s got a really soft voice, but I know he’s very interested in what’s going on, not only as an actor, but almost as a director. And as a friend,” Mayhew tells Bmag.
But the chemistry was not just with Ford; it was also with the rest of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” set. The Wookie-playing actor says there was “marvellous camaraderie” amongst the cast and crew.
Then he went on to describe the new breed of Star Wars actors and actresses, especially John Boyega and Daisy Ridley (who plays Finn and Rey, respectively), whom he had lots of scenes with. He said he liked John Boyega “very, very much” and described him as a great actor. Daisy Ridley (Rey) he compared to Natalie Portman and called “solid.”
Watch Peter Mayhew back as Chewbacca when “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” makes a debut on theatres this December 18.
