Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) opened Wheal Leisure after twenty years of it being closed. After sometime, the entire team became optimistic as they had seen evidence of ironstone, which meant that there was copper to be found.

While this happened, Charles Poldark (Warren Clarke) told his son, Francis (Kyle Soller) to imitate Ross and take more initiative with their mine, and to engage the workers as Ross did, even though people ended up talking about how he mixed too often with those beneath his class. Also, rumors started to go around that Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Ross were in a relationship.

Ross then helped young Jim Carter (Alexander Arnold) get married to young Jinny (Gracee O’ Brien), and gave her work so that Jim would stop poaching. Meanwhile, Ross became more and more fond of Demelza, who managed to serve him what he needed even before he asked for it. Besides, she proved to be a good cook while Prudie Paynter’s (Beaty Edney) arm was sprained.

Elizabeth Poldark (Heida Reed) then gave birth to young Geoffrey Charles, but on his christening day, his grandfather suffered from a heart stroke, forcing Francis to become preoccupied with his father’s mine. The boy’s birth also brought the couple farther apart as Francis grew to resent the fact that Elizabeth was more animated when Ross was around. This became more apparent when Francis began spending more time with George Warleggan (Jack Farthing), and even slept with a woman from the tavern.

Later, Jinny asked Demelza to ask Ross to tell Jim to stop poaching, as he had been poaching in order to feed his mother and four younger sisters. As Ross wasn’t around, Demelza looked around in his study, and found a nice dress in the trunk. When Ross came back, he instructed her to eat dinner with him, and after learning of Jim’s situation, decided to give him a job as the mine’s assistant purser.

However, Jim, who was making his last run at poaching that night, was caught and arrested. Ross then tried to talk to the magistrate and then went off to court without Jinny, who was currently giving birth. At Jim’s trial, Ross spoke in his defense as to Jim’s good character, and begged the court for leniency as he wouldn’t be able to survive the mines as Jim had asthma. In the end, he was sentenced to two years in prison, which Ross felt and told the court, that they hadn’t really shown Jim mercy.

While Ross was away, Demelza’s father came by to inform his daughter that he had married a rich widow who had made him see the error of his ways, and told her that he would bring her home the following day. She then tearfully bid  goodbye to everything in the study, and wore the dress in the trunk to see how it would fit. However, she wasn’t able to take it off before Ross arrived, asking for some rum, as he didn’t have a good day at all, and because he believed that he hadn’t helped Jim enough. He then was surprised to see Demelza in the dress, and got upset that she had overstepped her rank. He then comforted her after she began to cry as he had shouted at her, and kissed her. However, he quickly pulled away and went into his room. However, Demelza followed him and asked for help in unfastening the dress, and told him that she didn’t care what people said about them. They then ended up sleeping together.

The next day, after an awkward encounter with Elizabeth, who had decided to visit, she decided to run away, as she realized that she couldn’t be his servant any longer. After he realized this, he decided to get married to her.
