This “Pretty Little Liars” star is no longer “pretty little” anymore as Shay Mitchell strips down for her sexy cover for Maxim. And while Mitchell looks stunning in the cover, she admits that growing up, Mitchell tried to hide her half-Filipino heritage.

In her interview with Yahoo!, Mitchell revealed that growing up, she wasn’t a fan of mean girls or of going to high school. Being surrounded by white girls with blonde hair and blue eyes in Canada, she admitted that while she hated these mean girls, she knew back then that these girls had their own issues.

Mitchell is also no stranger to dealing with her own issues either. She said that being a half-Filipino in an area with predominantly white people, they would often notice her heritage and ask her if she was their nanny’s daughter. She revealed that she hated being asked who she was, which led her to dye her hair and put on colored eye contacts and even avoided staying under the sun to look as pale as possible. Mitchell said that looking back, “that girl wanted to be something she wasn’t.”

It wasn’t until Mitchell moved out of her hometown that she began to start embracing her true self. She said that moving to Thailand and Hong Kong has taught her how to be completely independent.

So what does Mitchell have to say about her role as a gay teen on her show? She said that she doesn’t feel like a “gay icon.” In every interview, she would often be asked how it feels like to play a gay character on the show. Mitchell said, “Why isn’t anyone asking the other girls what it’s like to kiss a boy?” She also admitted that she knows her role’s impact on the lives of the show’s fans.
