Read on to learn more about this episode.
At the Langston house, Jacob Langston (Landon Gimenez) kept on experiencing headaches every time Rachael Braidwood (Kathleen Munroe) had contractions, as the baby was making his head hurt. After a while, Jacob’s mother, Lucille Langston (Frances Fisher), noticed that Jacob wasn’t feeling well. Meanwhile, Jacob’s father, Henry Langston (Kurtwood Smith), and his uncle, Sheriff Fred Langston (Matt Craven), was watching on the front porch for any Returned that might want to enter in order to harm Rachael and her baby. Meanwhile Fred’s daughter, Dr. Maggie Langston (Devin Kelley), administered and assisted Rachael during her labor. However, they did not notice that the Langston family matriarch, Margaret Langston (Michelle Fairely), whom they had sent to the government facility for the Returned, snuck in through the back so that she could make Rachael disappear before the baby was born and before the angry mob outside the house burst in. Margaret made it inside, locked the door and began to convince Rachael to let everything go by telling her that Preacher James Goodman (Jim Parrack) had the power to reunite her with Tom.
Meanwhile, Preacher James had ICE Agent Marty J. Bellamy (Omar Epps) locked up in the basement as Marty did not believe in Preacher James. However, Preacher James knew that there would be more Returned once that child was born and that the world would not be able to handle the sheer amount of Returned that was going to come. Afterwards, Preacher James went to see Joey Nolan, the leader of the anti-Returned group, The True Living, to ask for his help in rounding up Fred’s deputies so that they would not be able to assist Fred at the Langston house if he called for backup. However, in the basement, Marty managed to escape by breaking off a piece of pipe and using that to bust the door handle.
Back at the Langston house, after Maggie discovered that Rachael’s door was locked, Fred and Henry broke in and forcibly brought Margaret outside the house. She tried to make them understand that the baby was hurting Jacob, but they did not believe her. Outside, she told the preacher that he would have to be the one to do it and the secret on how to make a Returned disappear. At that moment, Marty showed up, and Preacher James demanded that they hand over Rachael to them. Marty tried to call up Angela Forrester (Donna Murphy), his government contact, but no one responded. Fred tried to call his deputies, only to find out that Joey Nolan and his group had rounded them up and were holding them at the sheriff’s office.
At Rachael’s room, Rachael could sense that something was wrong. Because of this, Maggie told her that Preacher James believed that her son was a demon and that it should not be born. However, Maggie told her to focus on having the child. Meanwhile, Henry decided to try to talk to the preacher, who tried to explain to him that Rachael’s child was a demon, the Antichrist, whose coming had been foretold by Revelation. He was convinced of this because the child had caused the trance that made them all walk to Twain’s the other morning and it does not know anything but death, as it had gestated in death.
Shaken, he revealed to his brother that he was scared, as they did not know whether Preacher James was truly right or wrong. And if the child could control the Returned, he became afraid as he did not want to ever hurt his family and wife. After telling Lucille that Margaret had said that the baby was hurting Jacob, she went to check on him. Jacob then revealed to her that whenever the baby hurts, he hurts as well. Because of this, Lucille decided to take Jacob and Jenny out of the house to safety.
After their 10 minutes was up, Preacher James and his men broke in. Upstairs, Rachael began to go into labor.
After a brief struggle, Fred, Marty, Maggie and Henry were easily overpowered by the Returned and were tied up so that they would not be able to stop Preacher James from making Rachael disappear.
Upstairs, he discovered that when Rachael had returned with the baby, she had appeared in the field near the tree. He then convinced her that the child does not deserve to be born into a world full of pain by revealing that he knew that the baby’s name was Daniel. He told her that he knew this because Tom had told him so, and he was waiting for her on the other side. She then began to let go but was interrupted by Marty, who had been untied by Margaret. Because of this, Preacher James admitted that he believed that Daniel was a demon, and it was his mission to stop Daniel from being born. Marty then shot Preacher James after he tried to go after a pair of scissors to hurt Rachael, which allowed Rachael to properly give birth to a baby boy.
The next morning, the entire Langston family and Marty discovered through the news that millions of Returned were all over the world. Afterwards, he paid a final visit to Preacher James, who was in prison, on suicide watch. He reminded Marty that even if the world was still spinning, there were more tribulations happening around the world, such as fires in Tokyo and riots in Philadelphia, which meant that the end is already upon them. He then told Marty that he wished to remain alive so that he would be ready for the time that he would be called upon again to fight the evil that Marty had brought into this world. Marty then told him that Daniel was a normal, healthy boy. Preacher James then warned him not the be fooled by appearances, as the devil could easily disguise himself as an angel of light.
One year later, Marty helped the Returned find their relatives and homes in the Bureau of the Returned in Arcadia. At Twain’s, after having breakfast together, Henry noticed that Margaret was looking at them through the window. Fred then reminded Henry that Margaret missed him, as Henry had not yet spoken to her since the events that happened one year ago. Later that night, Marty joined Maggie, her family, Jenny and Elaine Richards (Samaire Armstrong) for dinner.
Upstairs, Rachael sang Daniel a lullaby so that he would be able to go asleep. After leaving him in his crib, a whole swarm of cicadas gathered at Daniel’s window.
