The Rock Confirms He Is Playing Black Adam in ‘Shazam’ Film
On Aug. 19, 2014, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed that he was in talks to star in a DC Comics film adaptation but has yet to decide between the Superhero Shazam and his archnemesis turned anti-hero Black Adam. Well, worry no more, Johnson was chosen to play villain turned anti-hero of Warner’s adaptation of the DC comics entitled “SHAZAM!” Read on for further details.
Exclusively on Variety, sources have confirmed that Johnson is set to play DC Comics Character, villain/anti-hero, Black Adam. Johnson confirmed the casting this morning by tweeting out which character he would be playing in the film.
Johnson told the press earlier for his affinity for anti-heroes, revealing that Black Adam was one of his favorite comic characters.
“I am putting my heart and soul and my bones into this role,” said Johnson in his earlier appearance in Mexico City for the promotion of his movie “Hercules,” promising comic fans that they won’t be disappointed.
Shazam, or earlier known as Captain Marvel, is a superhero which originated from DC Comics. When young Billy Batson utters the word “SHAZAM!,” he is immediately struck by a magical thunderbolt, transforming him into a superpowered adult hero Captain Marvel/Shazam, the Champion of Magic empowered by the powers of six Elders, each representing a letter of the magical words:
S for Solomon, granting him Solomon’s wisdom
H for Hercules, granting him Herculean strength
A for Atlas, granting him the stamina of Atlas, the Titan who bears the heavens on his shoulders
Z for Zeus, the God of Thunder, giving him the ability to command lightning and other magical prowess
A for Achilles, granting him the courage and bravado of the greatest hero of the Trojan War, Achilles
M for Mercury, swiftest of the gods, granting him godlike speed and his power to fly.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s character, Black Adam is a villain turned anti-hero who served with JSA (Justice Society of America) who at first played antagonist to Shazam. Black Adam is an ancient force, born to the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II. Supposedly, he was to chosen to be the first Shazam, until the intervention of the half-demonic Blaze. When uttering the words “SHAZAM!,” Adam is instead empowered by:
Shu, giving him stamina and invulnerability
Heru or Horus, giving him flight and speed
Amon, providing him super strength
Zehutti, or Thoth, giving him access to godly level of knowledge, magical and mundane
Aton, providing the magic lightning that transforms Adam
Mehen, giving him courage and godly degree of inner strength
Hiram Garcia will be producing the Shazam pic from a script written by Darren Lemke who has worked with films such as Jack The Giant Slayer and Shrek Forever After.
