Scary Movie 5 a Numbing Experience
A lot of people are wishing that the Scary Movie franchise die already. The latest one is based on several movies such as Evil Dead, Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. While a lot of people hate the movie franchise, they might be watching the movies in secret. Previous movies earned more than $800 million across the globe. This might be the reason why a fifth one is made.
The opening scene features Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen as a celebrity train wreck duo in one of the many spoofs of Paranormal ‘s surveillance footage gimmick. Most of Scary Movie 5 is based on Mama, which have scared a lot of people since it was released in January.
Jody (Ashley Tisdale) and Dan (Simon Rex) are parents to three kids found in the forest. Soon their house is haunted by the maternal being. The monster is captured on video cameras installed in every room of the house.
While it is a smart move to combine Mama with Paranormal, family-in-danger movies tend to be monotonous and this is the same with Scary Movie 5. Random references to Black Swan and the Inception are welcome breaks to the repetitiveness of the movie.
A baby’s head catching fire is not something to laugh about but there are several chuckle-worthy scenes featuring Jody and Dan’s housekeeper (Lidia Porto). She is in charge of the jokes concerning fatness, Latinas, and religion.
Mike Tyson appears in Scary Movie 5 but it is so forgettable that you might not remember seeing him after you go out of the cinema. Snoop Dogg plays a stoner who finds a cabin in the woods. Molly Shannon plays a drunken ballerina. Missing from the movie are the Wayans brothers. David Zucker and Pat Proft wrote the screenplay with Malcolm D. Lee as the director.
