‘Secret In Their Eyes’ Trailer: Hell Hath No Fury Like Julia Roberts Scorned
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and in the second trailer for “Secret in Their Eyes,” Julia Roberts’ Jess is a little more than scorned. Billy Ray’s adaptation of the Argentinian thriller seems to entirely more high-octane than the original 2009 film.
In broad strokes, the story follows FBI agent Jess (Julia Roberts), who finds her daughter brutally murdered and is out for revenge.
As the character herself says, “He can quit his job. He can change his name. He can dump his car. I will still find him.”
Accompanying her in her quest for vengeance is her partner Ray (“12 Years a Slave”’s Chiwetel Ejiofor) and their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman), who aid and abet, twisting the rule of the law to its utmost.
The movie, like the Argentinian original “El Secreto de sus Ojos” will take place mostly as a flashback, with Ejiofor’s character hunting down cold case leads many years after the traumatic incidents. But the similarities would seem to stop there, at least in this trailer, with the American adaptation looking much more fast paced, filled to the brim with executions, burning cars and gratuitous violence.
Ray looks like he has maintained the highlights of the original with this “Secret in Their Eyes.” The awkward, unrequited romance between Ricardo Darin and Soledad Villamil has translated to one between Ejiofor and Kidman, while adding his own spin to the tale: the protagonist is now the victim’s mother, instead of husband. Also new to the adaptation is the fact that the FBI now seems to be helping Jess actively with her revenge, as opposed hapless Darin in the original, who remained confused about the whole thing until the end.
(Of course, these are parallels we draw from having seen about 3:00 worth of footage from the new film, so receive our words with a pinch of salt) Instead, See the first trailer, and judge for yourself:
All in all though, we are really excited about this “Secret in Their Eyes”: it seems to stay faithful to the original in spirit, while at the same time adding an entirely new spin to the story. Be sure to check it out when it hits theaters on Nov. 20.
