WAS SERENA WILLIAMS NOT DESERVING TO WIN THE ‘SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR’ TITLE?
The prestigious “Sportsperson award of the year” by “Sports Illustrated” magazine has finally been announced. It was presented to renowned tennis player Serena Williams. The award has resulted in a lot of celebration, however, there has been a lot of contention too. Some have argued that racehorse American Pharoah was more deserving than her. Was Serena not deserving?
Serena Williams took to Instragram to express her joy and gratitude for having received the award from Sports Illustrated. She mentioned that she was elated that Sports Illustrated had recognized her dedication, hard work and sheer determination. She added that it definitely gives her lot of encouragement to move on and do better.
Many people were happy at Williams receiving the award as it celebrates her impressive career, people of color in the field of sport and also achievement of women. Williams was ranked no 1 for most of the week after she won 53 matches out of the 56 that was held. One of the users mentioned that it was probably “the best year of her career.” Since the awards creation in 1954, Williams becomes the third woman to receive it all alone. However, she is the first black woman to receive the award.
As stated earlier, not everyone was very happy about her win. In a poll that was created by Sports Illustrated, the racehorse American Pharoah took the first place. While pointing to the poll, Brian Zipse, who is the editor of Horse Racing Nation, wrote on twitter that he was very disappointed to see that the award went to the tennis player despite the fact that American Pharoah received the maximum vote when a poll was conducted by “Sports Illustrated.”
While there were tweets against her, there were many who supported her stating the award was meant for a person and not an animal.
Former Sports Illustrated writer Courtney Nguyen also was in favor of Serena William’s win and said that the award was given either to teams, coaches and some time to athletes individually to recognize their achievement in respective sports. However, never had she heard that it was being given to any animal which rules out the possibility of giving it to American Pharoah.
Jessica Luther, a journalist also mentioned that the controversy which happened after Serena Williams received the title is a part of sexism and racism that has shadowed the career of the tennis player for many years. So, we can indeed say that Williams was the well deserving sportswomen to get the award.
