Shakira’s Popular Song Loca Broke Copyright  [WATCH VIDEO]

Colombian diva Shakira’s hit song entitled “Loca” from her 2010 album “Sale el Sol” has landed ATV Latin and Sony/ATV Discos in legal trouble.  Read on to learn more about the controversy.

According to,  Sony ATV Latin and Sony/ATV Discos Music was found guilty on two subsidaries of copyright infringement  by U.S. District federal judge Alvin Hellerstein from New York.


Although Shakira’s song was distributed by Sony in both Spanish and English, but the copyright complaint mainly focused on the Spanish version. Consequently, the judge set free the Sony Corporation and Sony Music parent companies from the court case.

“Loca” which means “Crazy” in English is on the seventh studio album, Sale el Sol. Singer-songwriter, dancer, record producer, choreographer, and model’s 2010 hit ‘Loca’ was indirectly copied from another song. The song is a smash hit and sold more than five million copies and ruled Billboard Magazine’s Latin charts.

ATV Latin and Sony/ATV Discos which distributed Shakira’s Spanish version of “Loca” in the United States moves to a trial phase to settle on compensation to be paid. “Accordingly, I find that, since Bello had copied Arias, whoever wrote Shakira’s version of the song also indirectly copied Arias,” concluded Hellerstein after conducting a bench trial.  Click HERE  to read the judge’s full conclusion of the investigation.

The complaint came from Mayimba Music in behalf of Ramon “Arias” Vasquez, a songwriter from Dominican Republic. In the mid-1990s, he was known for composing “Loca con su Tiguera” under Mayimba Music, the company who acquired the rights on the song.

Vasquez  even sang his song to the Hellerstein during the trial  He also stated that eight years ago, he met Eduardo Edwin Bello Pou, known by the epithet El Cata. He also admitted that he had revealed two of his songs to Bello including the “Loca con su Tiguera.” He was even asked by Bello to record it.

However, Bello denied all the allegations. According to Bello “Loca con su Tiguera” was composed by him. Click HERE to listen to El Cata version of the song
