Under The Skin Starring Scarlett Johansson Hits U.S. Theatres on April 4, 2014 [WATCH VIDEO]
“Under the Skin” hits U.S. theatres on April 4, 2014. After seeing her as Black Widow in “The Avengers” and as a computer program named Samantha in Spike Jonze’s “Her,” the Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson takes on a role as a “man-eater” alien in “Under the Skin.”
Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the upcoming science-fiction film is based on the novel of the same name written by Michel Faber. With the help of screenwriter Walter Campbell, Glazer adapted the novel into film.
Other cast members includes Paul Brannigan, Krystof Hádek, Michael Moreland, Jessica Mance and Joe Szula. Read on for the synopsis and spoilers for “Under The Skin.”
“Under The Skin” Synopsis:
The story begins with an alien who takes the body of a woman named Laura (Scarlett Johansson) in order to lure men and hitchhikers in Scotland.
At first, these selected males will think that she’s just looking for a sexual adventure. Little did they know, their bodies are already being prepped for harvesting of meat- a delicacy in their alien world.
Her every move is monitored by another alien who takes the appearance of a motorcyclist. With every victim that she meets and kills, she seems to show no compassion for them until she met her downfall- a disfigured man. She took pity on the man and refused to kill him. The act was considered forbidden as she got to have a compassionate quality that only exists in humans. The second alien killed the man and tried to track down Laura.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the “Lost in Translation” star confessed that she enjoys being “in-between” and is uninterested in going a certain path for her various movie roles.
Aside from starring in Glazer’s indie film, she will also appear in the sequels of several blockbuster Marvel films such as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014) and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015.)
“I’d rather take the chance of a film not working than be stuck in a pattern of making the same movie over and over,” said Johansson in the WSJ report.
She also said that getting old doesn’t unnerve her and rather, she wants to enjoy every chance she gets.
“That part I’m happy about. It’s nice to be glamorous, but I don’t want to always have to be trendy and glamorous and an object of desire. I don’t want to be stuck in that forever. Because it doesn’t last,” she added.
BBC reported that the 29 year old actress took on the indie role because she is a fan of Glazer’s works and music videos. Glazer’s previous works includes brand commercials and music videos for music acts such as Massive Attack and Blur.
The 2014 film marks as his third venture in film after Sexy Beast and Birth starring Nicole Kidman.
“It’s also the first film I’ve done where the script was more of a blueprint or a guideline for the project than for anything else. We only discovered the performance and intention of the movie after the first two weeks of shooting, so it took some time to find itself,” said Scarlett in the BBC report.
