‘Sofia the First’ Welcomes Princess Elena: Disney’s First Latina Princess
Disney will finally have its first ever Latina princess. Say hello to Princess Elena of Avalor, who will be making her debut in a special episode of “Sofia the First” set to air next year.
According to USA Today, the Latina princess would also star in her very own animated spin-off series called “Elena of Avalor,” set to debut on Disney Junior in 2016.
In a statement released by Disney, Princess Elena is described as a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore. The network also described the new princess as “bold, caring, funny, and clever.”
The voice of Princess Elena would be dubbed by Aimee Carrerro from the ABC Family series “Young & Hungry.”
We can’t wait to finally meet the newest addition to the Disney family. It would be interesting to see a classic fairy tale story inspired by Hispanic and Latino families’ way of life. It’s also a great opportunity for children to know more about the culture and tradition of other countries.
According to E! News, “Sofia the First” is one of the highest rated cable telecasts among kids two to five years and girls two to five years. It’s also the second most popular show for preschoolers. It’s a great strategy to use the existing series as a platform to introduce Princess Elena to the younger audience. They obviously adore Sofia, and hopefully, they would take a liking to the Latina princess as well.
“Sofia the First” returns on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, and “Elena of Avalor” premieres next year on Disney Junior.
